{"id":172632,"date":"2023-11-14T07:08:42","date_gmt":"2023-11-14T12:08:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/?p=172632"},"modified":"2023-11-14T07:12:13","modified_gmt":"2023-11-14T12:12:13","slug":"state-issues-alert-about-deadly-drugs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/2023\/11\/14\/state-issues-alert-about-deadly-drugs\/","title":{"rendered":"State issues alert about deadly drugs"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>Submitted information<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>COLUMBUS \u2014 The Ohio Narcotics Intelligence Center (ONIC) has released a public safety bulletin alerting Ohioans to an increasing number of illicit drug samples found to contain mixtures of various unpredictable and potentially deadly drugs such as carfentanil, which is estimated to be 100 times more potent than fentanyl.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ONIC reported that forensic and drug testing labs across Ohio have recorded at least 17 drug samples containing mixtures of carfentanil and other drugs this year. These drug mixtures have been identified in several forms, including tablets, powder, and rocks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most of today\u2019s illicit drug mixtures \u2013 with or without carfentanil \u2013 are extremely potent, which can make life-saving efforts more difficult.\u00a0 From 2017 \u2013 2021, 56 percent of drug poisoning deaths in Ohio involved a mixture of illicit drugs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWithout sophisticated tests, it\u2019s impossible to know exactly what you\u2019re ingesting or how it will impact your body,\u201d said Cynthia Peterman, ONIC Executive Director. \u201cThere is no quality control for illicit drugs, which is why no one should ever take a liquid, pill, or powder that was given to them by anyone other than a licensed health care provider.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Common drugs often mixed in Ohio include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Fentanyl and its analogues such as carfentanil<\/li><li>Stimulants such as methamphetamine and cocaine.<\/li><li>Veterinary sedatives such as xylazine and medetomidine, which are rarely found alone and are often mixed with fentanyl.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Launched by Governor Mike DeWine in 2019,\u00a0ONIC is a specialized criminal intelligence unit that works to assist local law enforcement in conducting intelligence-driven drug trafficking investigations. ONIC\u2019s criminal intelligence analysts and computer forensic specialists provide investigative, analytical, and digital forensic support to local law enforcement agencies and drug task forces throughout Ohio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To report a drug tip to ONIC, call 1.833.OHIO.NIC.
