{"id":175858,"date":"2024-02-15T04:48:09","date_gmt":"2024-02-15T09:48:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/?p=175858"},"modified":"2024-02-16T04:59:03","modified_gmt":"2024-02-16T09:59:03","slug":"henderson-local-voters-will-see-changes-at-the-polls","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/2024\/02\/15\/henderson-local-voters-will-see-changes-at-the-polls\/","title":{"rendered":"Local voters will see changes at the polls"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>SCOTT TRUXELL\/<\/strong><em>independent editor<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Registered voters in Van Wert County who go to the polls in-person early or on Election Day will see new equipment, starting with the March 19 primary election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pam Henderson, Director of the Van Wert County Board of Elections, said poll workers will use \u201cepollbooks\u201d when greeting voters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey are an electronic pollbook, a tablet,\u201d Henderson explained. \u201cIt provides a quicker and easy check-in. Epollbooks have been around for quite awhile, 2015 or before. In Ohio, there are 84 counties that use epollbooks and now Van Wert County will too.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-full\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"350\" height=\"276\" src=\"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Voting-machines-2024-e1708077508579.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-175860\"\/><figcaption>Voters in Van Wert County will see \u201cepollbooks\u201d (left) when checking in to vote, and \u201cExpressvote\u201d kiosks (right) will be used to cast ballots.<em> Photos submitted<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Grant money was made available from the Van Wert County Commissioners and the Ohio Secretary of State\u2019s Office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn September, we ordered epollbooks,\u201d Henderson said. \u201cThey were delivered January 12, and initialized on February 6. We just had training yesterday (Tuesday) and now we will have training for our poll workers this Friday, Monday, and Tuesday right before early voting starts on February 21.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Local voters will also see Expressvote voting kiosks that were literally given to Van Wert County free of charge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey are a ballot marking device which is also ADA compliant,\u201d Henderson explained. \u201cActually, our clerks and I visited Lucas County back in June to see how epollbooks worked during the special election that they had. Lucas County had a surplus of ExpressVote kiosks and offered them to us for free. We now have 125 of them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSo now, when voters come in to early vote or election day, they will sign in and receive a ballot card with their precinct barcode printed on it,\u201d she continued. \u201cThey will put that ballot card into the ExpressVote and follow the screen prompts for voting. They can review their selections and make changes before printing on their ballot. Once they print their ballot, they will place it in the DS200 scanner.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>Henderson added that the voting kiosks will go through a test run before the start of early voting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAll voting equipment is tested prior to every election,\u201d Henderson stated. \u201cIt&#8217;s a process called Logic &amp; Accuracy (L&amp;A). They are locked up in the early vote room with security cameras, plus, they are not attached to the internet \u2013 the only information on it are the ballots. The voters make their marks on the screen and prints it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey do not store a voter&#8217;s ballot selections,\u201d she added. \u201cWe were told at training that they are a \u2018big pencil\u2019 that marks your ballot only.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mail-in absentee ballots will still be pre-printed ballots.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>SCOTT TRUXELL\/independent editor Registered voters in Van Wert County who go to the polls in-person early or on Election Day will see new equipment, starting with the March 19 primary election.
