AAA urges those who take part in the revelry to have a plan before getting behind the wheel. Beer and booze don\u2019t mix when it comes to driving \u2013 in fact, they can be a deadly combination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis year St. Patrick\u2019s Day falls on a Sunday, and that means more parties throughout the weekend. Whether you will be celebrating at a house party or on a pub crawl, if alcohol is part of the festivities have a plan \u2013 designate a sober driver, utilize ride share such as with Lyft or Uber, take public transportation, or spend the night where you are \u2013 to ensure everyone gets home safely,\u201d said Kara Hitchens, Manager of Public and Government Affairs for AAA. \u201cDon\u2019t be the reason someone \u2013 including yourself \u2013 doesn\u2019t get home.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-full\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"350\" height=\"197\" src=\"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/AAA-St.-Pattys-Day-2024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-176923\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 13.384 people were killed in crashes involving alcohol-impaired drivers in 2021, an increase of more than 14 percent from the 11,718 fatalities in 2020. Fatalities in crashed involving alcohol-impaired drivers continue to represent almost one-third (31 percent) of the total motor vehicle fatalities in the U.S.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>St. Patrick\u2019s Day is one of the deadliest times on our nation\u2019s roads. During the 2017-2021 St. Patrick\u2019s Day holiday period (6 p.m. March 16 to 5:59 a.m. March 18), 272 lives were lost in drunk-driving crashes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol website, last year, there were 53 alcohol-related crashes on St. Patrick\u2019s Day. Across the state there were three were fatal crashes that day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The consequences of driving impaired are not worth the risks. Drunk driving can result in death, jail time, the loss of your driver\u2019s license, and higher insurance rates, as well as dozens of other unanticipated expenses ranging from attorney fees, court costs, lost wages, and vehicle towing and repairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>To prevent senseless tragedies from occurring, AAA offers the following steps to have a safe and happy St. Patrick\u2019s Day celebration:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>If you\u2019re venturing out to a pub or attending a St. Patrick\u2019s Day party, plan ahead.<\/li><li>Decide whether you\u2019ll drink or you\u2019ll drive \u2013 you can\u2019t do both.<\/li><li>If you will drink, designate a sober, reliable driver to get you home safely.<\/li><li>If you are the designated driver \u2013 do not drink.<\/li><li>If you see a driver on the road that you suspect is impaired, pull over to a safe spot and call 911, giving police a description of the vehicle.<\/li><li>If you see people who are about to drive while impaired, take their keys and help them make other arrangements to get to where they are going safely.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re hosting a party where alcohol is being served, be a responsible host:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Have food and non-alcoholic beverages available.<\/li><li>Remember that it takes 40 minutes or longer for alcohol from a drink to be absorbed.<\/li><li>Take note of who\u2019s coming, who drinks, and who drives.<\/li><li>Make sure all of your guests designate their sober drivers in advance, or help arrange ride-sharing with other sober drivers.<\/li><li>Stop serving alcohol at least an hour before your guests start to leave for home.<\/li><li>Take the keys away from anyone who is thinking of driving while impaired.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDrivers are also advised to keep an eye out for pedestrians who have had too much to drink and may jaywalk and not obey traffic signals,\u201d said Hitchens. \u201cWalking while intoxicated can also be deadly, as lack of attention and coordination puts drunk pedestrians at risk of getting hit by a vehicle.
