{"id":179079,"date":"2024-05-09T20:59:03","date_gmt":"2024-05-10T01:59:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/?p=179079"},"modified":"2024-05-09T20:59:35","modified_gmt":"2024-05-10T01:59:35","slug":"settlement-reched-with-phone-giants","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/2024\/05\/09\/settlement-reched-with-phone-giants\/","title":{"rendered":"Settlement reched with phone giants"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>Submitted information<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>COLUMBUS &#8212; Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost has announced $10.25 million in three multistate settlements with the largest wireless carriers in the United States to resolve the 50 attorneys general investigations into deceptive and misleading advertising practices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ohio is due to receive more than $478,000 under the agreements with AT&amp;T Mobility together with Cricket Wireless, T-Mobile USA, and Verizon Wireless together with TracFone Wireless.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn a time when we rely heavily on our phones to stay connected, it&#8217;s unacceptable to make false promises about what consumers might expect from their wireless carriers.\u201d Yost said. \u201cOhioans deserve transparency and honesty from telecommunications companies, and this agreement ensures that they will receive just that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Key components of the settlements involve assurances that the wireless carriers will change their advertising and business practices going forward to avoid vague \u201cunlimited\u201d data claims, unclear \u201cfree\u201d phone offers and undisclosed conditions for monetary incentives for switching carriers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Under the agreements, the carriers must:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Make sure that all future ads are truthful, accurate and not misleading.<\/li><li><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\" alt=\"\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Clearly disclose restrictions on \u201cunlimited\u201d data plans.<\/li><li><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\" alt=\"\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Transparently disclose incentives for switching carriers.<\/li><li><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\" alt=\"\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Clearly disclose all material terms and conditions for consumers to receive \u201cfree\u201d devices or    services.<\/li><li><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\" alt=\"\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Explicitly state when an offer involves a lease agreement.<\/li><li><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\" alt=\"\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Justify claims of cost savings with clear comparisons.<\/li><li><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\" alt=\"\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Appoint a dedicated employee to handle consumer complaints from Attorneys General offices.<\/li><li><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\" alt=\"\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Train customer service to comply with the terms of these agreements.<\/li><\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Submitted information COLUMBUS &#8212; Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost has announced $10.25 million in three multistate settlements with the largest wireless carriers in the United States to resolve the 50 attorneys general investigations into deceptive and misleading advertising practices.
