{"id":179633,"date":"2024-05-23T03:39:15","date_gmt":"2024-05-23T08:39:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/?p=179633"},"modified":"2024-05-23T22:09:17","modified_gmt":"2024-05-24T03:09:17","slug":"phase-ii-of-eggerss-stadium-work-on-track-except-for","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/2024\/05\/23\/phase-ii-of-eggerss-stadium-work-on-track-except-for\/","title":{"rendered":"No elevator at Eggerss Stadium in 2024"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>SCOTT TRUXELL\/<\/strong><em>independent editor<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s plenty of good news about renovation work at Eggerss Stadium and a bit of disappointing news about a key part of the project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During Wednesday\u2019s Van Wert school board meeting, Superintendent Mark Bagley gave an update on Phase II of the massive renovation project and said much of the work is on schedule and some cases, ahead of schedule. The second phase of the project is expected to be complete by August 15, one day before the Cougars host Crestview in their final scrimmage of the preseason.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-full\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"350\" height=\"365\" src=\"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Eggerss-Stadium-elevator-shaft-5-22-2024-1-e1716520137959.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-179641\"\/><figcaption>Crews work on the new elevator shaft at Eggerss Stadium. <em>Scott Truxell\/VW independent<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe steel for the (new) press box arrived two weeks early,\u201d Bagley stated. \u201cThe concrete pad underneath is going to be complete, the restrooms will be complete and the concession stand will be complete. If you look from behind right now, they\u2019re building the elevator cocoon (shaft) where the elevator fits in and that\u2019s near completion right now. The landing in front of the press box will be complete and the press box itself will be completed;\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said there is one exception that\u2019s out of the school district\u2019s control \u2013 the news came down earlier this week that the actual elevator won\u2019t be available for the 2024 football season. The elevator is designed to take elderly and handicapped fans to a landing outside the press box.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cUnless there\u2019s something that happens, the elevator itself is on back order,\u201d Bagley explained. \u201cThat\u2019s been something we didn\u2019t know for sure but Monday we got that final confirmation, but it\u2019ll be all ready to be put in for next year. Our elderly and our handicapped (fans) \u2013 we\u2019re going to try everything we can to get some people up there in a safe manner.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re already in action to make sure that we have the handicapped platform in the northwest corner again so people can see the best they can and we\u2019re open to suggestions where else to that maybe couldn\u2019t get up to that platform,\u201d he added. \u201cThe news is better to get sooner than later to make sure we make preparations to accommodate all the people.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>Bagley also informed the board that parking will be expanded in the grassy area outside of Eggerss Stadium and will double in size compared to last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first phase of the massive Eggerss Stadium renovation project began last spring and went up to the start of the 2023 football season. It included concrete restoration, a refurbished Cougar Pride Wall, wider steps and hand rails, a brighter shade of paint, a renovated scoreboard and the installation of artificial turf.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Voters approved a bond issue in May of 2022 to help cover the cost of the massive overhaul of the stadium.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>SCOTT TRUXELL\/independent editor There\u2019s plenty of good news about renovation work at Eggerss Stadium and a bit of disappointing news about a key part of the project.
