{"id":181485,"date":"2024-07-18T03:40:37","date_gmt":"2024-07-18T08:40:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/?p=181485"},"modified":"2024-07-18T03:56:29","modified_gmt":"2024-07-18T08:56:29","slug":"ohios-sales-tax-holiday-notably-expanding","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/2024\/07\/18\/ohios-sales-tax-holiday-notably-expanding\/","title":{"rendered":"Sales tax holiday notably expanding"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>VW independent staff<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>COLUMBUS &#8212; Ohio\u2019s annual sales tax holiday will look much different this year compared to previous years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, instead of just three or four days, it will last 10 days \u2013 12 a.m. Tuesday, July 30, to 11:59 p.m. Thursday, August 8.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"150\" height=\"243\" src=\"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Mike-DeWine-headshot-3-2019.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-114781\"\/><figcaption>Mike DeWine<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In conjunction with the Ohio General Assembly, Governor Mike DeWine agreed to expand the length of the annuial event and it allow tax-free purchases made in-person or online on all eligible items of up to $500. Previous sales tax holidays allowed only school-related items, and offered much lower purchase price limits ($75 maximum on an item of clothing; $20 per item of instructional material and\/or school supplies).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOhio\u2019s sales tax holiday, historically, has been meant to help families buy clothing and school supplies for the upcoming school year,\u201d DeWine said. \u201cThis expanded sales tax break will help Ohio\u2019s families with back-to-school necessities as well as other substantial purchases during a time when so many household budgets are being strained.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, restaurant purchases will be tax-free during the 10-day period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cUnder Ohio law, food is taxable if it is consumed on the premises where it is sold,\u201d said the Ohio Department of Taxation. \u201cMost commonly, this applies when you are \u2018dining-in\u2019 at a restaurant. Since food is taxable when it is \u2018dine-in,\u2019 any menu item that is less than $500 would qualify for the sales tax holiday exemption, except for alcohol (or any other non-qualified item).\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Exemptions from the 2024 holiday include purchases of watercraft, outboard motors, motor vehicles, alcoholic beverages, tobacco, vapor products and items that contain marijuana.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>VW independent staff COLUMBUS &#8212; Ohio\u2019s annual sales tax holiday will look much different this year compared to previous years.
