{"id":188509,"date":"2025-01-14T22:49:55","date_gmt":"2025-01-15T03:49:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/?p=188509"},"modified":"2025-01-14T22:49:56","modified_gmt":"2025-01-15T03:49:56","slug":"fire-marshal-offers-safe-heating-tips","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/2025\/01\/14\/fire-marshal-offers-safe-heating-tips\/","title":{"rendered":"Fire Marshal offers safe heating tips"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>Submitted information<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As frigid temperatures settle into Ohio, the\u00a0Divisions of\u00a0State Fire Marshal (SFM)\u00a0and\u00a0Industrial Compliance (DIC)\u00a0are\u00a0offering some simple tips\u00a0on how to heat your home safely while avoiding costly repairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With home heating equipment being one of the leading causes of fire deaths each year, Ohio Fire Marshal Kevin Reardon reminds Ohioans to make sure they keep fire prevention top of mind as they heat their homes this winter, particularly during the upcoming cold spell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAny time we experience this type of extreme cold, people may be tempted to use alternative heating sources to stay warm while indoors,\u201d Reardon said. \u201cMany people don\u2019t realize these alternative heating methods can greatly increase the risk for a fire if used improperly, which is why we urge Ohioans to avoid these risks by following some basic safety tips and recommendations.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>SFM offers the following tips if you are considering using alternative heating sources:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Keep anything combustible at least three feet away from all heating sources.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Make sure heating sources like space heaters have \u201ctip-over protection,\u201d which are designed to automatically turn off in the event they get knocked over.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Never leave heating sources like space heaters, fireplaces, or wood stoves unattended.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Never use your kitchen oven or range to heat your home.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Never use kerosene or torpedo heaters indoors that could cause carbon monoxide poisoning.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>With the increased use of home-heating equipment, Ohioans are urged to check smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) alarms to ensure they are in proper working order. This measure can help prevent costly repairs and water damage.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Inspect and repair skirting around manufactured homes. This barrier helps maintain a consistent temperature beneath the home, preventing undue exposure to extreme cold.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Optimize your home\u2019s heating by making sure furniture isn\u2019t placed over or blocking vents.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use draft stoppers to keep gusts of cold air from slipping in beneath your doors.
