{"id":189596,"date":"2025-02-13T21:45:38","date_gmt":"2025-02-14T02:45:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/?p=189596"},"modified":"2025-02-13T23:38:35","modified_gmt":"2025-02-14T04:38:35","slug":"klopfenstein-seeks-to-update-sorn-law","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/2025\/02\/13\/klopfenstein-seeks-to-update-sorn-law\/","title":{"rendered":"Klopfenstein seeks to update SORN law"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>VW independent staff\/submitted information<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>COLUMBUS &#8212; State Representatives Roy Klopfenstein (R-Haviland) and Josh Williams (R-Sylvania Twp.) recently introduced legislation to close a current loophole in Ohio\u2019s Sex Offender Registration and Notification (SORN) laws.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This legislation will expand SORN laws to prevent sex offenders from living within 2,000 feet of their victim or loitering within 1,000 feet.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"313\" src=\"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Williams-and-Klopfenstein-2025.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-189597\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">State Representatives Josh Williams and Roy Klopfenstein introduce their bill to update Ohio\u2019s SORN laws. <em>Photo submitted<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>\u201cEighty percent of sexual assaults are committed by someone the victim knows,\u201d Klopfenstein said. \u201cUpdating current law to prohibit offenders from living near their victims is critical to ensure the safety of our children and greater communities.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Under current law, sex offenders are prohibited from living within 1,000 feet of any school, preschool, childcare center, children\u2019s crisis care facility, or residential infant care center. However, there is no restriction preventing them from living right next door to their victim.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cUnder no circumstance should a child fear their safety in their own home,\u201d Williams said. \u201cIt is critical we act swiftly to close this dangerous loophole and ultimately, protect our kids and other victims of sexual assault.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This bill is modeled after a law in Oklahoma that passed unanimously and has since been adopted in five other states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The legislation awaits a bill number and committee assignment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Klopfenstein represents Ohio\u2019s 82<sup>nd<\/sup>&nbsp;District, which includes all of Van Wert, Paulding, and Putnam counties and the southern portion of Defiance County.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>VW independent staff\/submitted information COLUMBUS &#8212; State Representatives Roy Klopfenstein (R-Haviland) and Josh Williams (R-Sylvania Twp.) recently introduced legislation to close a current loophole in Ohio\u2019s Sex Offender Registration and Notification (SORN) laws.
