{"id":195961,"date":"2025-08-17T20:40:40","date_gmt":"2025-08-18T01:40:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/?p=195961"},"modified":"2025-08-17T20:41:07","modified_gmt":"2025-08-18T01:41:07","slug":"lawmakers-want-to-raise-minimum-wage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/2025\/08\/17\/lawmakers-want-to-raise-minimum-wage\/","title":{"rendered":"Lawmakers want to raise minimum wage"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>VW independent staff\/submitted information<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A pair of Ohio Democratic state Senators are trying to raise Ohio\u2019s minimum wage to $15 per hour.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to a report from the <em>Ohio Capital Journal<\/em>, State Senator Kent Smith (D-Euclid), and Senator Hearcel Craig (D-Columbus), introduced&nbsp;Senate Bill 234&nbsp;last month, which would raise the minimum wage by a dollar per hour each year until reaching $15 per hour in 2029.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ohio\u2019s current minimum wage is $10.70 per hour&nbsp;for non-tipped employees and $5.35 per hour for tipped employees. The federal minimum wage is $7.25 per hour.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve got a crisis of affordability right now,\u201d Smith said. \u201cAnd some of how you fix the crisis of affordability is you make sure people have more money in their pockets from the jobs they work.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The bill would raise the state\u2019s minimum wage to $12 per hour starting January 1, 2026; $13 per hour in 2027; $14 per hour in 2028; and $15 per hour in 2029.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The state\u2019s commerce director would then adjust the minimum wage every year on September 30, starting with 2029. The new minimum wage would still take effect on January 1 every year.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe believe that it increases the purchasing and saving power of working Ohioans,\u201d Craig said. \u201cWe want families, no matter where you are, to have a livable wage.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The bill would also eliminate the tipped employee minimum wage and require all employees to be paid the state\u2019s minimum wage.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think it\u2019s important to also raise the tip worker minimum wage, which is one of the main focuses of the bill because those folks seem to be stuck in poverty if they\u2019ve got a tipped wage occupation,\u201d Smith said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the <em>Ohio Capital Journal<\/em>, this is not the first time Smith and Craig have introduced a bill that would increase the minimum wage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The duo introduced a bill during the last General Assembly that would have raised the minimum wage until it was up to&nbsp;$15 an hour in 2027, but it&nbsp;only was given time for sponsor testimony.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ohioans passed a constitutional amendment in 2006 that increases the state minimum wage every year based on the consumer price index.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A pair of Democrats in the Ohio House have also introduced a bill that would raise the state\u2019s minimum wage.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>State Representatives Dontavius Jarrells (D-Columbus), and Ismail Mohamed (D-Columbus), introduced&nbsp;Ohio House Bill 34, which would also increase the state\u2019s minimum wage gradually per year, but S.B. 234 would get to $15 per hour faster.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Under H.B. 34, the state\u2019s minimum wage would increase to $11 per hour on January 1, 2026, $12 per hour in 2027, $13 per hour in 2028, $14 per hour in 2029 and $15 per hour in 2030.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Eleven states and Washington, D.C. have&nbsp;minimum wages of $15&nbsp;or more, according to Paycom.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ohioans need to be making at least $22.51 an hour working a full-time job to be able to afford a \u201cmodest\u201d two-bedroom apartment, according to a recent&nbsp;report&nbsp;by Coalition on Homelessness and Housing in Ohio and the National Low Income Housing Coalition.&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>VW independent staff\/submitted information A pair of Ohio Democratic state Senators are trying to raise Ohio\u2019s minimum wage to $15 per hour.&nbsp;&nbsp; According to a report from the Ohio Capital Journal, State Senator Kent Smith (D-Euclid), and Senator Hearcel Craig (D-Columbus), introduced&nbsp;Senate Bill 234&nbsp;last month, which would raise the minimum wage by a dollar per [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[3],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-195961","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-news"],"publishpress_future_action":{"enabled":false,"date":"2026-08-04 11:35:26","action":"change-status","newStatus":"draft","terms":[],"taxonomy":"category","extraData":[]},"publishpress_future_workflow_manual_trigger":{"enabledWorkflows":[]},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/195961","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=195961"}],"version-history":[{"count":3,"href":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/195961\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":196005,"href":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/195961\/revisions\/196005"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=195961"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=195961"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=195961"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
