{"id":197275,"date":"2025-09-18T07:25:47","date_gmt":"2025-09-18T12:25:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/?p=197275"},"modified":"2025-09-18T07:25:51","modified_gmt":"2025-09-18T12:25:51","slug":"heartland-patriots-hear-pot-presentation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/2025\/09\/18\/heartland-patriots-hear-pot-presentation\/","title":{"rendered":"Heartland Patriots hear pot presentation"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>Submitted information<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mary Jo Hammond, a local social worker, presented a slideshow about marijuana and cannabis to the Heartland Patriots at their meeting this month.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of her first statements was that today\u2019s marijuana is very different than that of the 60\u2019s and 70\u2019s.&nbsp; Marijuana and hemp are the same plant.&nbsp;Hemp is a mixture of male and female cannabis plants, and produces less than .3% THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), while marijuana is more than .3% THC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hemp is legal in most countries, and has been legal in the US since 2015.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The FDA approved medical marijuana in 2020 for two conditions: child epilepsy and nausea for cancer patients.\u00a0It cannot be smoked publicly.\u00a0Its most popular forms are gummies and mints.\u00a0It also comes in liquid form. A law was passed in November, 2023 to allow a person to grow six plants, or 12 per household.\u00a0They must be out of sight.\u00a0Renters must have permission from landlords. They cannot be sold for profit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHead shops\u201d (\u201csmoke shops\u201d) can sell cannabis-related accessories, such as pipes, bongs, rolling papers, lighters, and vaporizers.\u00a0 Unlike dispensaries, they are not allowed to sell cannabis.\u00a0 Van Wert County has one dispensary, located in Delphos.\u00a0 There are 1,200 dispensaries in Ohio, and approximately 15,000 in the U.S. as of early 2024. Dispensaries must be state-licensed.\u00a0Doctors cannot prescribe marijuana, only suggest it as a possibility for various symptoms.\u00a0Medical marijuana cards can be purchased.
