The competition was fierce and extremely talented, with 30 teams competing — and a majority of those competing for 5-10 years.

The Van Wert students learned a tremendous amount throughout a process that stretched over the past three months. Working together as a team, problem solving, and overcoming adversity were definitely learned throughout.

“The students on the team love the problem solving required and they are learning valuable information in software, hardware, programming, teamwork, and communication, especially between the crew and drivers,” said Coach Bob Spath.

“I am in charge of programming and driving the robot,” said junior Alex Bair concerning his experience with the team. “Sometimes the motor will overheat or other things do not work. Learning how to program the robot and being a good team member is a tool that I can use in other areas of my life.”

Although the team did not move on to the state tournament, the team is already looking forward to next season and has set a goal of qualifying for the state competition!

Those who helped support this year’s robotics team efforts include The Van Wert County Foundation, Kennedy Manufacturing (Brandon Miller), and Braun Ambulances (Gary Kohls and Mark Slusher). Zane McElroy and Spath are team coaches.

In addition, with the vision and financial support of VWHS alumni Tom Compton and Randy Gardner, this new academic team has successfully begun what hopefully will be years of success in promoting academic excellence in the Van Wert City Schools.

Van Wert independent/VWCS information COLUMBUS — The Van Wert High School Robotics Team competed in the Central Ohio FIRST Tech Challenge Robotics competition this past weekend in Columbus.
