AYERSVILLE — Every Cougar swimmer scored points helping the Van Wert High School boys capture the sectional championship title and the girls\u2019 sectional runner-up title on Saturday.<\/p>\n

The Van Wert teams traveled to Ayersville High School to compete against Ada, Ayersville, Bryan, Coldwater, Defiance, Elida, Hicksville, Kenton, McGuffey Upper Scioto Valley, and St. Marys Memorial high schools.<\/p>\n

Sophomore Eric Easley finished as boys\u2019 sectional champion in the 100-yard backstroke. His time of 55.80 seconds breaks his own VWHS record. This first-place finish qualified him to move on to districts where he is seeded first. He will also compete in the 100-yard breaststroke after placing fourth in 1:05.92.<\/p>\n

Four senior boys also qualified by time to compete at districts: Trey Stemen placed third in the 200-yard individual medley (2:18.63); Cody Hanes placed fourth in the 100-yard backstroke\u00a0 (1:00.78); AJ Foster placed fifth in the 50-yard freestyle (24.07) and seventh in 100-yard freestyle (54.51); and Matt Cucciarre finished fifth in both the 200-yard freestyle (2:05.35) and the 100-yard backstroke (1:01.32).<\/p>\n

The 200-yard medley relay and the 400-yard freestyle relay teams also qualified to compete at districts after finishing third (1:49.38) and fourth <\/sup>(3:43.41), respectively. Team members are AJ Foster, Eric Easley, Cody Hanes, and Trey Stemen.<\/p>\n

Three Cougar girls also qualified by time to move on to districts: Senior Taylor Grooms was sectional runner up in both the girls 200- yard freestyle (2:10.80) and the 500-yard freestyle (6:05.08); freshman Hannah Stemen placed third in the 100-yard backstroke (1:10.54); and senior Erin Dingle placed fourth in the 500-yard freestyle (6:07.17) and sixth in the 50-yard freestyle (27.13).<\/p>\n

Divers Kase Schalois, Garrett McDowell, Gretchen Klinker and Kaylee Meyers will also compete in the district diving championships to be held this Thursday at BGSU. The swimming competition will be held on Friday.<\/p>\n
