{"id":205686,"date":"2026-05-08T20:06:30","date_gmt":"2026-05-09T01:06:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/?p=205686"},"modified":"2026-05-08T20:06:57","modified_gmt":"2026-05-09T01:06:57","slug":"ag-yost-leaving-for-private-sector-job","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/2026\/05\/08\/ag-yost-leaving-for-private-sector-job\/","title":{"rendered":"AG Yost leaving for private sector job"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>By Morgan Trau and Joe Donatelli\/Ohio Capital Journal<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost announced Thursday he will resign and take a private-sector job with nonproft law firm Alliance Defending Freedom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The \u201csurprise move\u201d was first reported by the&nbsp;Columbus Dispatch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Earlier Thursday, Yost\u2019s spokesperson did not confirm or deny the report when contacted, but half a dozen statehouse sources who wished to remain anonymous said Yost is expected to leave his job ahead of the November election.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"150\" height=\"249\" src=\"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Auditor-of-State-Dave-Yost-headshot-1-2018.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-97432\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Dave Yost<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>WEWS attended an event today in hopes of speaking with Yost, but his spokesman, Steve Irwin, physically blocked reporter Morgan Trau several times when she attempted to speak with the attorney general in a public area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Department of Public Safety Director Andy Wilson thanked Yost for his public service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAttorney General Yost has dedicated his entire professional career to keeping people safe \u2026 wish him the best in everything that he\u2019s going to do,\u201d Wilson said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Thursday afternoon, Yost tweeted that he is taking a job with Alliance Defending Freedom. He will be the firm\u2019s new vice president of Strategic Research and Innovation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yost has served as attorney general since 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prior to that, he was the state auditor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yost\u2019s political dreams of being governor were dealt a blow in 2025 when the Ohio Republican Party endorsed Vivek Ramaswamy. Yost\u00a0suspended\u00a0his governor campaign soon after, and has since kept a low profile. He is the only statewide Republican besides Governor Mike DeWine who is not currently running for office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>DeWine has the authority to appoint a new attorney general, with just six months until the general election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>Republican nominee for attorney general Keith Faber told WEWS that he looks forward to talking to the governor about the \u201cbest path forward.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>DeWine said he isn\u2019t making an appointment immediately and issued the following statement:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI am grateful for Attorney General Yost\u2019s long career in public service, from serving as Delaware County Auditor, Delaware County Prosecutor, Auditor of State, to Attorney General of Ohio. I wish him the best in his next endeavor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Having served as Ohio Attorney General, I know how important this office is and the great work done by its employees.
