{"id":205719,"date":"2026-05-10T20:44:47","date_gmt":"2026-05-11T01:44:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/?p=205719"},"modified":"2026-05-10T20:44:53","modified_gmt":"2026-05-11T01:44:53","slug":"bghs-student-wins-art-competition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/2026\/05\/10\/bghs-student-wins-art-competition\/","title":{"rendered":"BGHS student wins art competition"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>VW independent staff\/submitted information<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>BOWLING GREEN \u2013 Congressman Bob Latta (OH-5) has announced&nbsp;that Sarah&nbsp;Mathey from Bowling Green High School&nbsp;as the winner of Ohio&#8217;s Fifth District 2026 Congressional Art Competition.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mathey\u2019s\u00a0winning artwork, titled &#8220;Hometown,&#8221;\u00a0will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol Tunnel for one year. Three honorable mention winners will have their artwork displayed in one of Latta&#8217;s congressional offices for the year.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"295\" src=\"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Sarah-Mathey-5-2026.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-205720\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Congressman Bob Latta with Sarah Mathey, winner of the 2026 Congressional Art Competition. <em>Photo submitted<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Honorable mentions include Caine Margison from Upper Sandusky High School, Abby Kurtz from Carey High School and Amyalin\u00a0Salone from Galion\u00a0High School.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>57&nbsp;high school students from&nbsp;13&nbsp;high schools&nbsp;participated&nbsp;in this year&#8217;s competition. Latta hosted a reception at Bowling Green State University on to honor all participants and to&nbsp;showcase&nbsp;each individual work of art.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe have incredible talent across Ohio\u2019s Fifth Congressional District,\u201d Congressman Latta said. \u201cCongrautlations to Sarah Mathey on her winning piece, \u2018Hometown,\u2019 which beautifully\u00a0showcases\u00a0her artistic talent and creativity. As we celebrate America\u2019s\u00a0Semiquincentennial, it is important to reflect on where we come from and the meaning our hometowns hold for us, and Sarah captured that message beautifully through her work.\u00a0Congratulations to\u00a0all of\u00a0this year\u2019s honorees and everyone who\u00a0participated\u00a0in the Congressional Art Competition.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Latta represents Ohio\u2019s Fifth Congressional District, which currently stretches from Van Wert, Paulding and Mercer counties all the way into Lorain County in northeastern Ohio. In all, the district is comprised of all or parts of 12 counties. Latta serves as a senior member of the Energy and Commerce Committee.
