The YMCA and the Department of Health collaborated to provide free swim lessons and water safety training to residents in Van Wert County. Lessons began on Tuesday, June 2, and will end on Thursday. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 50 openings for the free lessons filled up in just a few days, demonstrating a strong community need for accessible water safety education. Accordingly, the decision was made to start a waiting list and look for additional funding for those who didn\u2019t get in the first round of swim lessons and water safety training. That funding source was found and more free lessons are planned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Initially funded through the Ohio Department of Health, the lessons were offered to at-risk youth and adults across Van Wert County \u2013 especially individuals who have never had formal swim instruction and may not otherwise have been able to afford it. The program\u2019s goal was simple and urgent: help more community members stay safe during the summer swim season by learning foundational skills that reduce the risk of drowning and build confidence in and around the water.<\/p>\n\n\n

The YMCA welcomed retired Aquatics Director Martha Martin back to the pool deck to help teach participants the basics of swimming and water safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI love seeing how the children progress each week,\u201d she said. \u201cIt means a lot when they ask what they can try next \u2013 because that\u2019s when you can see their confidence growing. Seeing them develop a love for the water, and knowing they\u2019ll be safter because of these lessons, is what makes my heart happy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Current Aquatics Director Libby Price emphasized the importance of partnerships that make programs like this possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe\u2019re truly grateful to the Ohio Department of Health for helping us expand swim safety education in Van Wert County,\u201d Price said. \u201cThere are many families in our community who want their children \u2013 and even adults in their household \u2013 to learn to swim, but cost can be a barrier. This support allows us to reach more people with life \u2013 saving skills and help prevent water \u2013 related accidents.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

YMCA of Van Wert County CEO Hugh Kocab said thanks to the support of the Van Wert County Foundation, 30 additional free swim lesson and water safety training openings will be available this fall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe YMCA extends sincere thanks to the Foundation for investing in this initiative and helping ensure that no child or adult \u2013 is left behind when it comes to water safety,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

More information about free fall swim lessions will be released later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
