{"id":22992,"date":"2012-04-11T05:31:46","date_gmt":"2012-04-11T10:31:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/?p=22992"},"modified":"2012-04-11T05:31:53","modified_gmt":"2012-04-11T10:31:53","slug":"ym-has-new-kid-fit-fitness-program","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/2012\/04\/11\/ym-has-new-kid-fit-fitness-program\/","title":{"rendered":"YMCA has new Kid Fit fitness program"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>YMCA information<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The YMCA of Van Wert County is offering Kid Fit, a sport based fitness program open to athletes and non-athletes in grades 5-8.\u00a0 It is for kids within this age range wanting to get in shape or become quicker, stronger and more agile for the sports in which they participate. The program is run through the Y\u2019s wellness department on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 3:30-4:30 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>Chad Strawn, certified personal trainer with the Y, instructs the program in a circuit style of training.\u00a0 Within each 60-minute session, the time is comprised of an active warm-up, 30 minutes of circuits that address that day\u2019s training focus, followed by a fun game to wrap up the session. Kids leave feeling energized and smiling.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_22993\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-22993\" style=\"width: 320px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thevwindependent.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/YMCA-Kid-Fit-program-4-2012.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-22993 \" style=\"border: 1px solid black\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thevwindependent.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/YMCA-Kid-Fit-program-4-2012.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"320\" height=\"272\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-22993\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kids with trainer Chad Strawn participating in Kid Fit at the YMCA of Van Wert County. (YMCA photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Students in grades 5-8 represent a special population in fitness.\u00a0 Due to growth spurts and body changes, kids in this age group often suffer from balance and coordination issues.\u00a0 This age group also has specific needs in regard to strength training that differ from adults or even high school age individuals.\u00a0 Many participate in sports, so training to improve agility, speed, vertical leap and first-step quickness is necessary.\u00a0 Kid Fit does all of this.<\/p>\n<p>The focuses of Kid Fit are transferable to improvements in all sports; however, Kid Fit is not just for athletes.\u00a0 It is for any child who needs to improve body awareness and overall fitness goals.\u00a0 Childhood obesity is at an all time high and, with the reduction of physical fitness in schools and homes, children are suffering health related issues we used to see in adults.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter only a few weeks of being in the program, we are already seeing improvements with Kid Fit participants,\u201d stated Julie Schaufelberger, YMCA wellness director.\u00a0 \u201cThese improvements have been in coordination, balance and overall fitness.\u00a0 Some of the kids participate in sports and others do not, but Kid Fit and the specific training is benefiting them all,\u201d Schaufelberger added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe offer three sessions of Kid Fit per week and some kids only come once or twice per week, depending on other activities in which they are involved.\u00a0 They are still getting benefits from the time they are here, no matter how often they come.\u00a0 We wanted to offer flexibility for kids who would be involved,\u201d Schaufelberger added.<\/p>\n<p>Eric McCracken, a Van Wert resident whose son, Jalen, participates in Kid Fit, says he has noticed some changes in his son\u2019s athletic performance on a local traveling basketball team.\u00a0 \u201cAfter just two weeks (six sessions) in the program, I noticed he had more body control and his feet seemed quicker,\u201d McCracken noted. \u201cHis stamina has greatly improved, which has helped his performance during basketball practices and games.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe hates to miss Kid Fit, he loves it,\u201d McCracken added.<\/p>\n<p>For more information about Kid Fit, call 419.238.0443, visit the YMCA website at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vwymca.org\">www.vwymca.org<\/a>, or email <a href=\"mailto:kristin@vwymca.org\">kristin@vwymca.org<\/a> or <a href=\"mailto:julie@vwymca.org\">julie@vwymca.org<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The YMCA of Van Wert County is partially funded by The Van Wert County Foundation and United Way of Van Wert County.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>YMCA information The YMCA of Van Wert County is offering Kid Fit, a sport based fitness program open to athletes and non-athletes in grades 5-8.\u00a0 It is for kids within this age range wanting to get in shape or become quicker, stronger and more agile for the sports in which they participate.
