Technology was a topic of discussion at Monday's Crestview Local Board of Education meeting, and board members followed the discussion on their laptop computers that are part of the district's transition to "paperless" meetings. (Dave Mosier\/Van Wert independent)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

CONVOY \u2013 The Crestview Local Board of Education took care of a number of personnel items, while also getting an update on kindergarten enrollment from Elementary Principal Kathy Mollenkopf during its April meeting Monday evening.<\/p>\n

The board also approved amended appropriations for Fiscal Year 2012.<\/p>\n

Teaching contracts approved include the following: Mary Alvarez, five-year limited; Mike Bowen, continuing; Natasha Breese, two-year limited; Pam Brown, five-year limited; Jill Carpenter, five-year limited; Deb Gehres, continuing; Anne Myers, two-year limited; Jared Owens, two-year limited; Darby Schwieterman, continuing; Craig Taylor, two-year limited; Trey Stover, five-year limited; and Jim Wharton, five-year limited.<\/p>\n

A one-year contract was also given to Lori Orsbon as EMIS coordinator, effective the 2012-2013 school year.<\/p>\n

A number of teachers were also awarded contracts for this summer on an as-needed basis for high school and elementary intervention\/education programs. Contracts were awarded to Brenda Dye, James Lautzenheiser, Rebecca Macki, Deanna Ray, Amy Roan, Melissa Roop, Ali Sawmiller, Lori Waltz, and Jim Wharton.<\/p>\n

Karen Pettyjohn was also given a two-year limited contract in the area of food service.<\/p>\n

Mollenkopf said kindergarten registration was at 67, the most she could remember, with 18 of those coming through open enrollment.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s the most I think I\u2019ve ever had,\u201d the elementary principal said, adding that recognition for this year\u2019s kindergartners will be May 15.<\/p>\n

During his report, Superintendent Mike Estes told board members his administration was working to set up a retreat in June to discuss pending state legislation that could have an impact on the Crestview district, such as the \u201cdays to hours\u201d transition measure and teacher and administrator evaluations.<\/p>\n

\u201cKind of close the door and have at it, think outside the box and try to figure out how we\u2019re going to address everything,\u201d the superintendent said.<\/p>\n

Estes also asked board members about possible projects that could be done by Van Wert Rotary Club, per a request by the club, and noted he has agreed to become a member of the governing board of Northwest Ohio Educational Technology, an agency that deals with school-related technology.<\/p>\n

The superintendent said that, when the district begins receiving wind farm fees and the school facilities project is finally put to rest, he would like to see a greater focus on technology issues.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s something we can\u2019t avoid, even if we wanted to,\u201d Estes said of the trend toward more technology in Ohio schools.<\/p>\n
