The Van Wert Parks and Recreation Department will be conducting two tennis programs this summer for elementary and middle school age young people.<\/p>\n

Youngsters who will be in grades 1-5 this coming year will have a blast playing Midwest Youth Team Tennis in Van Wert this summer. The program will use the QuickStart Tennis Play format, one of the most significant moves ever to introduce tennis to youth, providing a way to bring them into the game by using equipment, court dimensions, and scoring tailored to their age and size. The team concept emphasizes fun, fitness, and friends. The multi-week program consists of team practice and match play for boys and girls.<\/p>\n

This program is open to girls and boys entering grades 1-5, whether or not the child has ever held a racquet. The participant program package includes a team uniform, tennis ball, age appropriate tennis racquet, one-year USTA junior membership, subscription to Bounce<\/em> magazine, and the Ace\u2019s Kids Club package (cooler bag, water bottle, sunglasses, activity book, birthday card, and other fun tennis items). Cost for the program is $55 per participant.<\/p>\n

The Van Wert program will start June 6 at the new Van Wert County Foundation Tennis Complex on the west side of the Van Wert Middle School\/High School campus and will continue through July 18. Matches and practices will be played on Wednesdays — from 5:30-6:30 p.m. for grades 1-3, and from 6:30-7:30 p.m. for grades 4-5.<\/p>\n

Note: There will be no practice\/match on July 4; however, all participants are invited to attend an open play date on June 23 at the official opening ceremonies of the Van Wert County Foundation Tennis Complex.<\/p>\n

Young people who will be in grades 6-8 that are transitioning between the beginner and intermediate skill levels will enjoy Van Wert Futures Team Tennis this summer. Players will continue to work on their technique, movement, and tactics using the skill and age appropriate green dot tennis ball. Midwest Futures Team Tennis makes the game more accessible — and more fun — by allowing kids to continue to develop their game in a fun team atmosphere.<\/p>\n

This program is open to girls and boys entering grades 6-8 who are interested in playing tennis. The participant program package includes a team uniform, one can of green dot tennis balls, an age appropriate tennis racquet, a one-year USTA junior membership, a subscription to SMASH magazine, and the Ace\u2019s Kids Club package (cooler bag, water bottle, sunglasses, activity book, birthday card, and other fun tennis items). Cost for the program is $55.00 per participant.<\/p>\n
