{"id":27256,"date":"2012-08-02T06:06:41","date_gmt":"2012-08-02T11:06:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/?p=27256"},"modified":"2012-08-02T06:06:41","modified_gmt":"2012-08-02T11:06:41","slug":"county-recorder-issues-scam-warning","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/2012\/08\/02\/county-recorder-issues-scam-warning\/","title":{"rendered":"County recorder issues scam warning"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Information submitted<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Van Wert County Recorder Kim Hughes has been notified that several Ohio residents have received a letter of solicitation to purchase a copy of their deed.\u00a0 The company is located in Columbus Ohio and refers to themselves as &#8220;Local Records Office&#8221;.\u00a0The mailing is made to appear as if it was from an official government records office.\u00a0 The company is offering to obtain a copy of the person&#8217;s property deed for a fee of $89.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The wording in the letter implies that you may pay up to $89 for a copy of your deed at the Recorder&#8217;s Office, which is very misleading,\u201d Hughes said, noting that\u00a0copies of a deed can be obtained anytime from the Recorder&#8217;s Office at a cost of 25 cents per page.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA typical deed is two pages and costs 50 cents,\u201d the county recorder added. \u201cAny deed recorded after January 3, 1994, can be viewed and copied for free from the Recorder&#8217;s website at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.landaccess.com\/\">www.landaccess.com<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Hughes added that this is not the first time these types of letters have been circulated.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Please remember that once your deed is filed with the Recorder&#8217;s Office it is a permanent record of your ownership and protects your property rights,\u201d she said. \u201cIt makes no difference whether you have a copy or even the original deed in your possession.\u00a0Your rights of ownership are safe and secure.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A copy of the letter has been forwarded to the Ohio Attorney General&#8217;s Office for review.\u00a0Residents of Van Wert County\u00a0may contact the Recorder&#8217;s Office for further information or assistance by calling 419.238.2558 or emailing <a href=\"mailto:recorder@vanwertcounty.org\">recorder@vanwertcounty.org<\/a>.\u00a0 The office is located in the Courthouse, Room 206, 121 E.
