(Dave Mosier/Van Wert independent)

The board heard a presentation from Jerry Corbin of Solar Planet, a company proposing to install a 1-megawatt solar power system at the school. Corbin said the system — which Solar Planet would install at no cost to Vantage — would provide, on average, 80 percent of the school’s electric power needs annually at a cost competitive with current rates from American Electric Power. He noted that the system couldn’t provide all of the school’s normal power needs since it would risk becoming an overproducer, something that could create a regulatory headache for Vantage.

In addition to generating most the school’s electricity during the school year, Corbin said Vantage could sell back excess power generated during the summer months when usage was lower at the school to AEP to help offset power costs.

The board appeared to be interested in the plan, which could move forward with the creation of a power purchase agreement between Solar Planet and Vantage. However, creation of a PPA is likely several months down the road, Corbin noted.

Superintendent Staci Kaufman spoke highly of the proposal, noting that it was not only a way to provide “green” energy for the school but also would be part of the school’s educational process.

Also Thursday, Baucom gave a report on the school’s food service program, while the board also approved cafeteria bids from Aunt Millie’s Bakeries (bread) and Arp’s Dairy (milk), as well as cafeteria prices for the coming school year.

The board also took action on a number of personnel items, including approval of several Adult Education staff contracts.

Personnel action included the hiring of Larry Regedanz as network systems instructor and Brenda Wurst as a teacher’s aide. Regedanz and Health Technologies instructor Leigh Carey were also given supplemental contracts for three extra days spent working at the school.

Adult Education contracts include the following: Annette Klinger, computers and Health Careers instructor; Virginia Hammons, Police Academy; Carol Schaefer, Health Careers; Carolyn Fast, basket weaving; Diane Jones, Adult Education transitions coordinator/counselor; Ted Tumbleson, EMT; Sandra Henkener, ABLE, Michele Prichard and Stephanie Calderon, substitute secretaries; Calderon, Health Careers; Keith Williamson, Police Academy; Shirley Jarvis, STNA coordinator; Jackie Brandt, public safety programs manager; and Tonya Bunch, Health Careers.

The board also approved two items related to the Ohio School Facilities Commission construction/renovation project at the school. Items approved include replacement of brick on the west wall of the building at a cost of approximately $150,000, and relocation of support columns in two classrooms, with an estimated cost of $75,000, pending approval by construction manager Gilbane Building Company. The work is needed to correct problems found during the renovation project.

Vantage would also be seeking co-funding for the changes from the OSFC.

In other action, the board:

Approved the ABLE/GED contract with Lima City Schools, effective July 1.

Recognized school nurse designees for the 2012-2013 school year (Health Technologies instructors Reesa Rohrs and Carey).

Accepted, with thanks, a $200 donation from Eleanor Souders for the Haiti Rotary Interact Club under the direction of Peg Bollenbacher.

Approved the Vantage list of substitute employees and the Western Buckeye Educational Service Center substitute list.

Authorized payment to W.A. Sheets for negotiated change order work totaling $61,406 necessary to correct a field dispute to include mechanical couplers.

Approved the Adult Education Student Consumer Handbook for the 2012-2013 school year.

Authorized Vantage’s participation in an Enterprise Zone agreement with Kirk Stoller Honey in Latty to receive a 2 percent payment in lieu of taxes.

The next Vantage Board of Education meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, September 6, in the Community Room.

DAVE MOSIER/independent editor The Vantage Board of Education held an hour-long discussion on the merits of a solar power proposal, heard a report from Cafeteria Manager Penny Baucom and also employed a number of Adult Education staff members during its August meeting on Thursday.
