Like any typical Pandora, I unlocked the door and rattled around in the expanse of space that will become the home of the Wassenberg Art Center. Unlike the nasty outcome in the story of the unfortunate curious girl who opened Pandora’s Box, opening the door of the Armory further reassured me it is a great fit for the art center. One discovery was an area where the caretaker once stayed. Perfect for artist-in-residence programs, which often require short-term housing for an artist who may have to travel distances to share their craft. That space even had its own bathroom at one time. The original beadboard ceilings all seem to be intact and the old steel doors are as sturdy today as they were when they were fabricated. Today we discovered the whereabouts of the original front lights and the owner’s willingness to see them restored to their original place. Someone was sitting on a platform near Town Creek enjoying their lunch. It’s the small things that add up to what is going to be a wonderful thing and we’d like to see this community involved in this endeavor.

Detail of a reinforced window inside the Van Wert Armory. Not many know the history of the Peony goes way back to Greek Mythology and Jens Svendsen has depicted this tale in a mural. His wife, painting professor at BGSU, Mille Guldbeck also is displaying paintings, which pay homage to the American Garden. Admission to this exhibit is free and is sponsored by 1st Federal Savings & Loan of Van Wert.

Are you ready for the Van Wert County Fair? We’ll be there August 26 from 1-5 p.m. to help you check in your artwork and ready it for judging. Let us know if you have any questions. We’ll also be on hand to answer any questions about our classes, exhibits and programs. Our volunteer artists are finishing the paintings that will be hung in the old treasurer’s office windows. Jack Merriweather of Paulding, Weston Thompson of Van Wert, and Kay Sluterbeck of Van Wert have been busy working under the direction of our instructor and assistant Matt Temple. I couldn’t resist the temptation to paint either and had a lot of fun painting a happy fair-going pig. Visit us at the Arts and Photography exhibit that features artists from our area. Even better? Volunteer your time to sit with the exhibit and answer any questions visitors may have regarding the art center, our programs and all the good things in our future. Ten hours of volunteer time with us makes you eligible for a free Wassenberg Art Center membership! That can add up to some decent savings on class and program fees. Give us a call at the art center to sign up!

The Hot Air Festival Plein Air Paint Out is coming up soon and will be held Friday and Saturday September 7-8. Plein Air translates roughly to “open air” and there are painters who specialize in this technique. Attracted to the way light interprets our world. plein air painters often work quickly to capture what we see outside. A painting sale will follow the paint out and cash prizes will be awarded. This is open to anyone who likes over 18 who likes to paint and registration information can be found on our website and Facebook page. The competition is sponsored by Dr. and Mrs. Kevin Laing. Applications are also available here at the art center.

The Wassenberg Art Center’s hours during exhibits are: Tuesday through Sunday 1–5 p.m. and you may contact the art center at 419.238.6837, by email: info@wassenbergartcenter.org or via our website at: wassenbergartcenter.org.

The Wassenberg Art Center is located at 643 South Washington Street in Van Wert.

By Hope Wallace Keys unlock all kinds of things.
