Amundson, whose name was even on the meeting’s agenda as a volunteer for the FFA/Ag program, was remembered for all his contributions to the school, which he had served both as a teacher and volunteer.

Jon Amundson

“Jon’s going to be missed,” Superintendent Mike Estes said, noting that approximately 200 high school students wore green on Monday to honor the longtime Life Sciences teacher.

Estes also had an update on the district construction project, while also noting that the State Report Card ratings should be out now on September 30. The superintendent said the district should earn a rating of “Excellent” or “Excellent with Distinction,” but said it’s not certain at this point, since final information has not been released.

Estes noted that the school construction/renovation project is mostly completed, with just a few punch-list items, including the rubber floor tile and interior doors, left to do. No formal dedication ceremony is planned for the project, the superintendent said, adding that an open house planned for Sunday, October 14, will be just that: an open house.

The superintendent also informed the board that the district would be purchasing a replacement for the driver’s education car. Estes said the 2006 vehicle had a number of problems, which several trips to the mechanic and body shop had not fixed, while fleet pricing the district is eligible for makes purchasing a new driver’s ed. car “very attractive.”

The board also approved Sandra Grooms as the high school Scholastic Bowl advisor for the 2012-2013 school year, Frank Minnig as eighth grade boys’ basketball coach, Christine Albright as middle school basketball cheer coach, Ray Etzler as eighth grade boys’ basketball volunteer coach, and Don Coleman, Faith Coleman, Doug Germann, Eric Hancock, Glenn Hicks and Kirby Joseph as volunteer drivers for the box van for swing choir and band equipment.

Building principal reports included the information that 74 percent of students in grades K-5 would be participating in the American Heritage Bible classes.

Fifth-grade students would also be attending the annual Cows & Plows ag education program on September 27, while Crestview Middle School celebrated “Constitution Day” on Monday.

High School Principal Mike Biro said that preliminary enrollment was the lowest since he has been principal, with a small freshman class and higher attendance at Vantage Career Center (40 students) noted as reasons for the decrease.

Biro also noted that a Brazil foreign exchange student also began classes today.

In other action, the board:

Renewed a memorandum of understanding with Crestview employees regarding the operation of the district food service program.

Approved a stipend of $9,450 to the members of the PRIDE Committee for the current school year.

Went into executive session to discuss personnel items, with no action taken afterwards.

The next meeting of the Crestview Local Board of Education will be at 6 p.m. Monday, October 15, in the district boardroom.

Van Wert independent staff CONVOY – The Crestview Local Board of Education honored a longtime employee who died over the weekend and also approved a number of supplemental contracts during its September board meeting on Monday.
