(Dave Mosier\/Van Wert independent)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Van Wert City Board of Education approved a number of personnel items and also heard reports on the start of school last week during its September meeting held Wednesday in the First Federal Lecture Hall.<\/p>\n<p>The half-hour meeting included a report from Superintendent Ken Amstutz on traffic snarls at Van Wert Elementary School and renovation work being done at the former Jefferson Elementary School building.<\/p>\n<p>Amstutz noted that buses had problems with meeting the shuttle schedule the first week of school and attributed that to the large number of students being transported this year \u2013 especially to the new grades 1-5 elementary school.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy Friday, we should have times set,\u201d the superintendent said, noting that he feels the school year has gotten off to a good start otherwise.<\/p>\n<p>Amstutz also reported on the New Tech High School program implemented this year for incoming freshmen. The program, which will eventually operate in all four high school grades, is going well, he noted, and he thanked teachers and staff for their help in getting the program underway.<\/p>\n<p>An open house that will include a New Tech demonstration has been set at Van Wert High School for Wednesday, September 26 (more information will be provided).<\/p>\n<p>The superintendent also said the move for LifeLinks Community School into the S.F. Goedde Building has also gone very well, adding that that program is beginning to see more students enrolled from outside the district, which was a goal set for LifeLinks when it was first developed. The LifeLinks board is also seeking to provide mental health services to students who need such services.<\/p>\n<p>An open house has been scheduled for 11:30 a.m. Friday, October 12, so that the community can see what changes have been made at the Goedde Building. Lunch will be served at 12:30 p.m. during the open house.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->Board member Mike Morrow reported on the Van Wert Area Performing Arts Foundation, the organization that operates the Niswonger Performing Arts Center of Northwest Ohio, stating that, while ticket sales were a little disappointing for the NPAC\u2019s gala celebration concert and lecture, both events were well received by those who attended.<\/p>\n<p>Morrow did note that tickets sales for several upcoming events, including The Lennon Sisters and Oak Ridge Boys concerts, are doing very well.<\/p>\n<p>The board also approved contracts for Fiscal Year 2013 with the Van Wert County Board of Developmental Disabilities for Help Me Grow services and Van Wert County Hospital for Ohio Children\u2019s Trust services \u2013 both part of the Family and Children First program, for which Van Wert City Schools is the fiscal agent.<\/p>\n<p>Morrow also said that a meeting is needed with the Van Wert County Board of Commissioners and the agencies served by the Family and Children First program concerning a financial commitment from the county for the program.<\/p>\n<p>Personnel items approved include accepting the resignation of Ryan Strickler as a paraprofessional at Van Wert High School, while hiring Krista Baer as the VWHS Television Production teacher and Candice Schwieterman as a kindergarten teacher. Travis Boley was also hired as a VWHS special education paraprofessional, while Sue Lichtle will be employed as a LifeLinks cafeteria worker and work study\/service learning coordinator, and Emily Myers as a speech and language pathologist intern for the district.<\/p>\n<p>Supplemental contracts approved include the following: Anita Zuber, Van Wert Middle School and Van Wert High School Scholastic Bowl advisor; Marie Markward and Cindy Klinger, halftime VWMS Beta Club advisors; Karla Butler, Tami Suzuki, Pam Morris and Chris Gemmer, quarter-time VWMS Student Rewards Committee chairs; Ed Clark, VWMS Cougar Council advisor; Kim Doidge and Susan Semer, halftime VWMS yearbook advisors; Mike Myers and Brendon Moody, sixth grade intramural coordinators; George Scott and Kerry Koontz, VWHS Beta Club co-advisors; John Butler, VWHS website advisor; Baer, VWHS newspaper and Excalibur yearbook advisor; Matt Alessandrini, VWHS musical music director; Chad Kraner and Alessandrini, VWHS play co-directors; Myrna Hamrick, VWHS Fellowship of Christian Athletes advisor; Kelly Van Horn, French Club advisor; Eugene Aufderhaar, German Club advisor; Brenda Smith and Deb Mengerink, Junior Class co-advisors; Kathleen Taylor, National Honor Society advisor; Wendy Howell and Jeff Hood, VWHS Student Rewards coordinators; Amy Neal, Spanish Club advisor; Judy Krites and Katie Bowersock, halftime Student Council advisors; Charles Witten, Varsity \u201cV\u201d Club advisor; and Jennifer Trittschuh, Scarlet Squad advisor.<\/p>\n<p>In other news, the board:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Approved elementary, middle school and high school fees as presented.<\/li>\n<li>Approved elementary and high school handbooks as presented.<\/li>\n<li>Approved Treasurer Mike Ruen\u2019s report and an amended Certificate of Estimated Resources, as well as FY 2013 permanent appropriations, as presented.<\/li>\n<li>Authorized a number of change orders for the elementary school and Jefferson school projects.<\/li>\n<li>Learned that Myrna Hamrick was advanced on the pay scale from master\u2019s to master\u2019s plus 15 hours, while Angie Stemen was advanced from bachelor\u2019s to bachelor\u2019s plus 150 hours.<\/li>\n<li>Went into two executive sessions to discuss real estate and personnel items, with no action taken afterwards.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The next meeting of the Van Wert City Board of Education will be at 5 p.m. Wednesday, October 17, in the First Federal Lecture Hall.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>DAVE MOSIER\/independent editor Van Wert City Board of Education approved a number of personnel items and also heard reports on the start of school last week during its September meeting held Wednesday in the First Federal Lecture Hall.
