(Dave Mosier/Van Wert independent)

The Vantage Board of Education authorized Superintendent Staci Kaufman to negotiate an agreement with Solar Planet for a 1-megawatt solar panel array during its October meeting Thursday.

Kaufman said after Thursday’s meeting that the company plans to install approximately 4,200 solar panels on five acres of land owned by Vantage. While some of the panels could be installed on car ports in school parking lots, most would be on land around the school.

Solar Planet had looked at installation of some solar panels on the roof of the Vantage building, but that didn’t prove feasible, largely because of the skylights on the roof of the new portion of the building, and the inability of the roof on the older portion of the building to handle the added weight of the panels.

Board approval followed a presentation on the project by Solar Planet representatives Jerry Corbin and Dave Dwyer.

The board also unanimously approved a proposal from Connie Boley of Swan Memorials and the Artful Swan for artwork to be installed in the building. Boley told board members that she planned to incorporate items used by students in the various Vantage programs to spell out the phrase “Skills + Knowledge = Employment.” She also plans to create, with Vantage students’ help, a statue that would be comprised of items related to the various Vantage educational programs. Total cost of the project would be $2,000 or less, Boley said.

The former Vantage student said she was excited about doing the project. “When I graduated from Vantage, I never thought 32 years later I would come back as an artist,” Boley told board members.

Kaufman also provided an update on the school’s renovation/construction project, noting that exterior re-bricking has nearly complete, but landscaping is still ongoing. The superintendent added, though, that work is still on schedule and that the move-in date for all portions of the facility is still set for Christmas vacation, at the latest.

Kaufman also noted that the project should qualify for $55,000 in energy efficiency payments from the Grid Smart program.

The superintendent also thanked those who participated in the Drive One 4 UR School program sponsored by StateWide Ford that raised $6,100 for Vantage.

Treasurer Lori Davis reported that Vantage should receive $12,000 in January from casino revenues, and a total of $40,000 by 2014 if current enrollment figures are maintained.

In personnel action, the board accepted the resignation of cafeteria cook Vicki England and also voted to approve the following banquet employees: Amanda Carlisle, Austin Clark, Benjamin Dwyer, Cora Finfrock, Victoria Girardot, Bethanee Grote, Mark Inkrott, John Parsons, Jazzlynn Smith, Julie Whitten, Ashley Wurst and Allan Zimmer as student banquet workers; Marcia Osenga, Penny Baucom, Cindy Harting, Diane Becker, Annette Klinger, Karen McGilton, Lori Allen, Nancy Keith, Vicki Smith and Mary Ann Hall as adult banquet works; and Robin Burns as banquet supervisor.

The following Adult Education instructors were also hired: Cynthia Krizan, Health Careers; Roger Roberts, Welding; and Karen McGilton, MA Computers.

The Vantage board also took the following action:

Accepted the donation of a 2001 Buick LeSabre worth $3,200 from Van Wert resident Peter Niagu.

Accepted the donation of a Carrier 25-ton HVAC unit worth $11,000 from Slagle Mechanical of Sidney to be used in Vantage’s new swing space.

The next meeting of the Vantage Board of Education will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, November 1, in the community room.

DAVE MOSIER/independent editor The Vantage Board of Education authorized Superintendent Staci Kaufman to negotiate an agreement with Solar Planet for a 1-megawatt solar panel array during its October meeting Thursday.
