Crestview had no problem handling Wayne Trace to win the Van Wert County Hospital Tip-Off Classic on Saturday in the Cougar\u2019s Den.<\/p>\n

The Knights used a balanced offense and sticky defense, led by Damian Helm\u2019s 18 points, to wear down Wayne Trace. Isiah Simerman added 16 points, including a 4-for-6 performance from beyond the arc, while Cam Etzler had 13 points for Crestview. The Raiders were led by Ryan Kortokrax\u2019s 16 points, while Dalton Sinn added 10 points for Wayne Trace.<\/p>\n

The Knights took a 13-11 lead in the first quarter and never looked back, increasing their advantage to 9 points, 29-20, at the half. It was 43-32 at the three-quarter mark.<\/p>\n

Crestview actually shot better from three-point range, than it did from in front of the arc. The Knights made 15 of 37 two-point attempts (40.1 percent), but canned 6 of 13 from three-point range (46.2 percent) The Knights were 12 of 22 (54.5 percent) from the free-throw line. Wayne Trace shot 41.2 percent (14 of 34) from two-point range, but only 12.5 percent (2 of 16) from beyond the arc. The Raiders made 6 of 10 free throw attempts (60 percent).<\/p>\n

The taller Crestview team also dominated the boards, pulling down 39 rebounds to just 25 for the Raiders, while the Knights had 8 turnovers to 10 for Wayne Trace.<\/p>\n

Crestview is now 2-0 to start the season, while the Raiders are 1-1 after defeating Lincolnview on Friday night.<\/p>\n

In the consolation game, the Cougars salvaged a portion of the weekend with a 59-35 victory over Lincolnview. AJ Smith led Van Wert with 23 points, while Joey Hurless added 19 points for the Cougars. They were the only Van Wert players in double figures. Nick Leeth topped the Lancers with 14 points, the only Lincolnview player in double figures.<\/p>\n

Like the championship game, the Cougars garnered a four-point lead, 15-11, in the first quarter, and built that advantage to 13 points, 31-18, by halftime. Both teams scored 9 points in the third quarter to maintain Van Wert\u2019s 13-point lead, while the Cougars outscored Lincolnview 19-8 to win going away in the final stanza.<\/p>\n

Van Wert returned to its normal strategy of hitting high-percentage shots inside the arc, making 21 of 33 two-point attempts for a whopping 63.6 percent. The Cougars were much less successful from three-point land, though, hitting just 2 of 13 attempts there (15.4 percent). Van Wert was 11 of 19 at the line (57.9 percent). The Lancers made 10 of 23 two-point attempts (43.5 percent), but just 1 of 13 from three-point range (7.7 percent). Lincolnview was the best free-throw shooting team in the tourney on Saturday, though, knocking down 12 of 16 (75 percent) at the line.<\/p>\n

The Cougars edged Lincolnview in rebounding, bringing down 24 caroms to 22 for the Lancers. However, the Van Wert\u2019s defense forced 20 Lincolnview turnovers, while the Cougars had just 9 on the night.<\/p>\n

Van Wert is now 1-1 on the year, while the Lancers start the young season at 0-2.<\/p>\n
