(Photo submitted.)

When it comes to Christmas, everybody loves to see what they’re getting under the tree and in their stockings. However, the students at Crestview know that not everyone is fortunate enough to be able to buy presents or gifts, so to help the community, the students have participated in several different activities to give back.

Three weeks ago, the student council started the annual “Penny Pitch.” This is a fundraiser in which every class has a jar that they can place money in. All silver change and dollar bills counted towards the classes’ jar it went into. However, all of the pennies that were brought in were negative towards the classes’ total. “I liked this because it was really fun to see who would win. I brought $25 in pennies for the seniors just so they wouldn’t win,” said Junior Scott Miller. With the senior class winning the past three years, the staff snapped that streak, bringing in $224.38, with a school total of $409.33.

Also trying to give back during the season, the newly formed FCA has started their own fundraiser. The members of the FCA were encouraged to bring in clean clothes that aren’t being worn anymore, so that they could go to good use throughout the community. “With the economy being how it is, we just thought this would be a good idea. We are able to help the less fortunate during the holidays, and it was definitely a good idea for the FCA’s first activity,” said FCA president Cameron Etzler.

After the Penny Pitch, CHS started another donation, this one called “Toys for Tots.” Outside of the high school office, there is a big barrel for students to place any toys in that will be sent to Toys for Tots. “This is another fundraiser that we do to give back to the community. Along with the Penny Pitch, all of the proceeds will be going to Toys for Tots,” said student council president Jake Harmon.

Along with the high school, the middle school is pitching in with the holiday spirit. The students are bringing in money that they earned at home from doing extra work or tasks. This money is being pooled together, and they are trying to provide Christmas for three local families. “We wanted to do something the kids could take ownership of. By having them earn their own money and do all of the shopping, we feel like we have accomplished this,” said middle school teacher Mr. Kreischer.
