(Jan Dunlap\/Van Wert independent)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Van Wert Cougars got close, but couldn\u2019t close it out at the end, losing to visiting Lancaster 40-37 in a non-conference game on Saturday afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>The Cougars trailed by one point, 9-8, at the end of the first quarter, and were down by four, 20-16, at the half. Van Wert cut the lead back to one, 26-25, in the third quarter with a 9-6 run but a 14-12 run in the final stanza by Lancaster was enough to eke out the three-point victory.<\/p>\n<p>Erin Morrow led the Lady Cougars with 13 points, while Alexis Dowdy added 10 points for Van Wert. The Golden Gales were led by Audrie McRitchie\u2019s 13 points, while Katie Miller added 12 points for Lancaster.<\/p>\n<p>The Cougars are now 8-10 on the year.<\/p>\n<p>Van Wert\u2019s junior varsity team didn\u2019t fare any better, losing to the Golden Gale JVs 33-22 in the first game of the afternoon.
