First thoughts of still life may bring to mind a picture of rusty farm machinery beside an old barn or a huge tree with interesting limbs, but that not what we’re after. True, the subjects aren’t going anywhere, and therefore, are still life, but they don’t entirely fit the photographic definition of still life.

Still life photography takes place entirely with the photographer who decides what will be shot, the angle from which it will be shot, its location in the overall composition, the type and how much lighting will be used and where the light source is placed. In addition, the texture and color of the background is to be considered, and how far away the camera is placed from the subject. Those are a lot of decisions to be made, but not hastily.

You need to look at the subject from multiple angles and heights to determine which one will show it most effectively. Often the one chosen will not be the one that you initially thought would work best. For help with this, check the library for books that show how the master painters placed their subject in the picture and the angle from which it is viewed.

The same goes for the lighting. Move the sources around and see how the effect of lights can change, but still illuminate the subject. Desk lamps are easy to move and are a good source of adequate light. Again, to get ideas for lighting and backgrounds, check the library for books that show how the master painters showed the illumination and backgrounds of their subjects.

Try to pick a background color that contrasts with the subject to make the subject stand out. Select a plain background to avoid calling attention away from the subject. Consider how pale or vivid the color as well as how light or dark it is contributes to the mood you are trying to establish.

The next time you thumb through a catalog of products, or a menu of entrees at a restaurant, think of what the photographer had to consider before he made that shot.

If you have any questions regarding our Camera Club meetings, classes or programs and would like to sign up please call the Wassenberg Art Center at 419.238.6837, email info@wassenbergartcenter.org or register online at wassenbergartcenter.org.
