Now, local veterans organizations are asking local organizations and individuals to sacrifice a day to help them put out flags for the Memorial Day holiday.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"MGN Online graphic\" rel=\"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Memorial-Day-flags-artwork-5-2013.jpg\" href=\"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Memorial-Day-flags-artwork-5-2013.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-38113\" style=\"border: 1px solid black\" src=\"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Memorial-Day-flags-artwork-5-2013.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"330\" height=\"278\" \/><\/a>Local veterans groups and related groups have been placing flags on veterans\u2019 graves for many years, according to Van Wert County Veterans Service Officer Barry Johns. But with the membership of such groups declining \u2013 and aging \u2013 it\u2019s getting tougher and tougher to come up with the man (and woman) power to accomplish the task.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI see all the (veterans) clubs struggling to find someone \u2013 Civil Air Patrol, Boy Scout troops (for example) \u2013 to come out and help them,\u201d Johns said.<\/p>\n<p>This year, the groups will place approximately 48,000 flags on veterans\u2019 graves located in the county\u2019s 42 cemeteries.<\/p>\n<p>While the various county veterans organizations have responsibility for placing the flags, Johns said that any help that service clubs, churches, or other organizations could provide would be very much appreciated. He also suggested that individuals who typically place flowers on relatives\u2019 graves could help out by placing flags on those graves and others nearby.<\/p>\n<p>Those interested can contact the posts or association that takes care of a particular cemetery. The following is a listing of veterans groups and the cemeteries where they place flags:<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->American Legion Post 208 (Convoy) \u2013 McNeal, Mentzer, Convoy IOOF, Sugar Ridge, German Evangelical, Kings, McClure, Glenn, Baptist and German Wittung cemeteries, all in Tully and Harrison townships.<\/p>\n<p>Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5803 (Van Wert) \u2013 Scott, Taylor, Mohr, Mount Pleasant, Dunkard, Dix and Ridge cemeteries.<\/p>\n<p>American Legion Post 178 (Van Wert) \u2013 Woodland Cemetery in the city of Van Wert.<\/p>\n<p>American Legion Post 207 (Willshire) \u2013 Mausoleum, Wren, East Wren, Fletcher, Greenbrier, Schumm, Willshire, Hileman and Pleasant Grove cemeteries.<\/p>\n<p>American Legion Post 346 (Ohio City) \u2013 Olive Branch, Granger, Tomlinson, Ridge and Woodlawn cemeteries.<\/p>\n<p>Amvets Post 698 (Middle Point) \u2013 King Cemetery in Washington Cemetery.<\/p>\n<p>Venedocia Memorial Association \u2013 Venedocia and Goodwin cemeteries.<\/p>\n<p>American Legion Post 191 (Spencerville) \u2013 Horeb, Wright, Louth-Fissel and Hance cemeteries.<\/p>\n<p>Flags will be placed on military veterans\u2019 graves Saturday, May 18, with a rain day of Saturday, May 25, Johns said.
