(Dave Mosier\/Van Wert independent)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A number of local high school musicians entertained Sunday afternoon during the eighth annual Van Wert County Young Artists Recital held at First United Methodist Church.<\/p>\n<p>The students, who all participated in Ohio Music Educators Association\u2019s solo and ensemble contest, performed pieces for which they were judged at contest.<\/p>\n<p>The largest number of musicians this year, by far, were from Van Wert High School, although Crestview and Lincolnview were both well-represented, while a pianist from Paulding also performed.<\/p>\n<p>The music ranged was mostly classical in nature, from Puccini\u2019s aria \u201cO mio babbino cara,\u201d from Madama Butterfly to a Chopin mazurka, although the VWHS Woodwind Trio did perform an arrangement of Civil War songs.<\/p>\n<p>This year, 17 different individuals and groups performed, 11 of those from VWHS, five from Crestview and one \u2013 the Lincolnview Select Choir \u2013 from that school.<\/p>\n<p>More had been expected, but school delays and cancellations due to winter snowstorms caused problems with some students\u2019 practice time<\/p>\n<p>Those who performed included the VWHS Percussion Ensemble (Adam Long, Peyton Closson, Jon Lisa, Miranda Rickard, Alex Bair), which performed \u201cSea Wind\u201d by O\u2019Connor; the VWHS Sax Quintet (Jenna Waterman, Grace Mitchener, Claire Gamble, Danielle Slagle, Mark Taylor), \u201cEight Russian Folk Songs,\u201d Liadov\/Schmidt.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->Also, Crestview\u2019s Quintin Bouillon, who sang \u201cGia il sole dal Gange,\u201d by Scarlatti; the VWHS Trumpet Quartet (Daniel Bashore, Janelle Sperry, Scott Turner, Matt Saunier), which played \u201cCanzon\u201d by Scheidt; VWHS student Jenna Waterman, who sang \u201cIl mio bel foco,\u201d by Marcello; Crestview\/home-schooled student Caitlin Feasby, who played Chopin\u2019s \u201cMazurka in B Minor\u201d; VWHS student Alex Bair, who played \u201cYellow After the Rain\u201d by Peters on the marimba; the VWHS Mixed Clarinet Quartet (Sarah Mengerink, Sarah Aurand, Emma Humphrey, Katie Arn), which played \u201cSarabande\u201d by Grieg\/Donatelli.<\/p>\n<p>Also, VWHS junior Daniel Bashore, who sang \u201cNow Shines the Fullest Glory\u201d By Haydn; Paulding senior Jared Ross, who played Brahms\u2019 \u201cRhapsody\u201d on the piano; Crestview junior Brooke Nofer, who sang \u201cAlma del core\u201d by Caldera; the Lincolnview Select Choir (Kayla Hertel, Kelsey Clemons, Kelly Smith, Katie Marbaugh, Danyelle Trisel, Hillary Ludwig), which sang \u201cMovin\u2019 On\u201d by Hannisian; the VWHS Trumpet Trio (Jacob Hoverman, Cody Adelblue, Trevor Pearson), which played \u201cFanfare and Allegro\u201d by Pappas.<\/p>\n<p>Also, the VWHS Woodwind Trio (Stephanie Haggis, Allison Smith, Andrea Foster), which performed an arrangement of Civil War songs by Hall; Crestview senior Caitlin Hancock, who sang \u201cO mio babbino cara,\u201d by Puccini; Van Wert senior Jon Lisa, who played \u201c2040 Sortie\u201d by Abel on the snare drum; and the VWHS Vocal Quartet (Mark Taylor, Thad Davis, Nate Simson, Hunter Munroe), which sang \u201cGentle Annie\u201d arranged by Parker\/Shaw.<\/p>\n<p>Several local pianists accompanied the student singers and instrumental performers. Accompanists include Marilyn Alessandrini, Dee Fisher and Danille Hancock.<\/p>\n<p>Participating music teachers were Hancock from Crestview; Lincolnview Choir Director Stacie Korte; VWHS music teachers Tina Decker, Tonia Gamble, Karen Kelly and Robert Sloan; and several private teachers, including Decker, Dee Fisher, Danille Hancock and Annette Hoverman.<\/p>\n<p>As it has since the beginning, First United Methodist Church hosted the recital in its sanctuary, while The Van Wert County Foundation sponsored it through its Sanctuary Music Series.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>DAVE MOSIER\/independent editor A number of local high school musicians entertained Sunday afternoon during the eighth annual Van Wert County Young Artists Recital held at First United Methodist Church.
