In the simulation the government class discussed how education level affects their future occupation and eventually helps determine their income. In the government class each student is assigned an occupation with a corresponding income as well as a life situation. Students must then make deductions from their gross monthly income in the form of health insurance, retirement savings, local, state and federal taxes, as well as Social Security/ Medicare tax. This allows them to determine their net income.

Once the students have all of their information the simulation begins. At Van Wert High School a number of community volunteers from a variety of fields ranging from auto and clothing sales to childcare, insurance and credit, guide the students through stations where they must budget according to their net income. In the end, the students must make sure their income exceeds expenditures. After the simulation there is a follow-up talk with the community members who share their experiences in their areas of expertise. This simulation is conducted by The Van Wert County extension office through the Ohio State University.

After the government class returned from the “Real World/Real Money” Simulation, it was time to participate in field day. The speech class organized a field day competition Thursday afternoon for the high school students. Students competed in a variety of events such as cornhole, kickball, dodgeball, Wiffleball, egg toss, cupcake decorating, side walk chalk design, and Just Dance. The junior class won the field day, and the seniors earned second place. The student body would like to thank the high school staff for facilitating the field day!

On Thursday, May 16, the Lincolnview Senior Government class attended the “Real World/ Real Money” simulation held at Van Wert High School.
