{"id":4011,"date":"2011-03-02T14:36:20","date_gmt":"2011-03-02T19:36:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/?p=4011"},"modified":"2011-03-02T14:37:22","modified_gmt":"2011-03-02T19:37:22","slug":"wassenberg-camera-club-news-3211","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/2011\/03\/02\/wassenberg-camera-club-news-3211\/","title":{"rendered":"Wassenberg Camera Club News 3\/2\/11"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Rex Dolby<\/strong><\/p>\n<div>Although  Jodi Hattery&#8217;s demonstration of\u00a0the use\u00a0of\u00a0the studio lights  in\u00a0illuminating a portrait February 24 at the Wassenberg Art Center is  the most important news, I have another item to clear up first.<\/div>\n<p>Possibly you remember that I reported on a presentation made January 27  by Bill Gallaway about the photo equipment he uses in his work.\u00a0 I had  consistently spelled Bill&#8217;s name as &#8220;Bob&#8221; in that article.\u00a0 I certainly  apologize to all concerned.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4012\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4012\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thevwindependent.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/LightingDemo.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4012 \" style=\"border: 1px solid black\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thevwindependent.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/LightingDemo.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"258\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4012\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">From the left, Jodi Hattery takes aim as Keith Mongold and Doug Heckler  observe.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Now,\u00a0to Jodi&#8217;s  demonstration.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0She had prepared a handout that provided many of the  facts concerning camera settings and the placement of the lights and  subject.\u00a0 She emphasized the need for a camera with manual settings for  setting the shutter speed (125-160), f\/stop (5.6-6.3), ISO\u00a0(100-200),  and having a hot shoe adapter for a wireless radio remote or sync cord  to connect to the lights.<\/p>\n<p>When the sync cord was not working  properly, it was suggested it was time for the club to replace it.\u00a0  Other suggestions were:\u00a0 Turn the room lights out to get a\u00a0better  impression of the subject in the view finder, Turn the camera&#8217;s preflash  off\u00a0so the lights will sync properly, and When the lights are set up  the way you want, stretch a string\u00a0to the base of each so if there is  need to reposition them, they will be\u00a0at a distance where they will  still illuminate with the same intensity.<\/p>\n<p>Jodi said that the  main light should be powerful enough to light the whole set.\u00a0 It should  be about as high as\u00a0subject&#8217;s shoulder\u00a0and aimed at about 45 degrees to  the subject.<\/p>\n<p>The fill light is not as bright and is set up  on the other side of the subject to soften the shadows.\u00a0 It may be  omitted to obtain a more dramatic lighting effect.<\/p>\n<p>The hair  light is a smaller spot light to shine on the subject&#8217;s head to high  light the hair.\u00a0 This will be especially important if the subject&#8217;s hair  color has little contrast with the backdrop.<\/p>\n<p>The subject  should be\u00a0placed about 3\u00a0 feet from the backdrop to avoid harsh shadows  and\u00a0have their shoulders positioned at an angle to the camera.<\/p>\n<p>Jodi stressed that all lights are to be unplugged at the conclusion of  the session.\u00a0 Members reconvened in the main gallery to view the shots  Jodi and Chloee Gamble had taken.<\/p>\n<p>The club&#8217;s next meeting will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, <span style=\"color: #00008b\">March 10<\/span>,  at the Wassenberg Art Center on 643 S.
