{"id":41740,"date":"2013-08-10T06:55:59","date_gmt":"2013-08-10T11:55:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/?p=41740"},"modified":"2013-08-10T06:55:59","modified_gmt":"2013-08-10T11:55:59","slug":"odot-browned-grass-should-recover","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/2013\/08\/10\/odot-browned-grass-should-recover\/","title":{"rendered":"ODOT: Browned grass should recover"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><i>Ohio Dept. of Transportation news<\/i><\/p>\n<p>LIMA &#8212;<b> <\/b>The brown grass along area highways is expected to recover and green up according to the herbicidal spraying company contracted by the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT).<\/p>\n<p>Officials with ODOT District 1, based in Lima, met with representatives of Mercier\u2019s Inc. of South Point on Thursday to assess the condition of the roadside vegetation that was sprayed in July along some two-lane highways in the district. The 2, 4-D-based chemical sprayed to kill broadleaf weeds also contained a growth retardant.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thevwindependent.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/ODOT-logo.gif\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-645\" alt=\"ODOT logo\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thevwindependent.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/ODOT-logo.gif\" width=\"100\" height=\"100\" \/><\/a>The spraying was performed in each of ODOT District 1\u2019s eight counties: Allen, Defiance, Hancock, Hardin, Paulding, Putnam, Van Wert and Wyandot.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAccording to the contractor, the reaction we\u2019re seeing with the vegetation is typical with the chemical mixture used,\u201d said Kirk Slusher, Ohio Department of Transportation District 1 deputy director. \u201cAs expected, the grass first turns brown before it begins to recover and in the areas we\u2019ve examined, that is occurring. We expect that to continue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>ODOT regularly performs herbicidal spraying by contract. Vegetative retardants, which slow the growth of grass, are typically included in the mix to reduce the number of mowings each year. \u201cWe can reduce our mowing by 50 percent in those areas where a retardant is applied,\u201d said Slusher.<\/p>\n<p>Retardants used in the past have mostly browned just the tips of the grass. \u201cTheir particular brand of retardant resulted in more browning than we\u2019re used to seeing,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Grass that does not recover will be reseeded by the contractor, said Slusher.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ohio Dept. of Transportation news LIMA &#8212; The brown grass along area highways is expected to recover and green up according to the herbicidal spraying company contracted by the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT).
