According to an American Cancer Society report, smokers who quit can expect to live up to ten years longer than those who continue to smoke. Quitting is hard, but smokers can increase their chances of success with help.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thevwindependent.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/No-smoking-artwork-8-2013.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-42409\" alt=\"No smoking artwork 8-2013\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thevwindependent.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/No-smoking-artwork-8-2013.png\" width=\"200\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/No-smoking-artwork-8-2013.png 200w, https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/No-smoking-artwork-8-2013-150x150.png 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a>Research shows that much of the risk of premature death from smoking could be prevented by quitting. Smokers who quit, regardless of age, live longer than people who continue to smoke. Smokers who quit reduce their risk of lung cancer \u2013 10 years after quitting, the lung cancer death rate is about half that of a continuing smoker\u2019s. Quitting also lowers the risk for other major diseases including heart disease and stroke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cQuitting smoking is an important step towards reducing your cancer risk and celebrating more birthdays,\u201d said Marybeth Torsell, health initiatives representative for the Society. \u201cThe FreshStart program provides great tips and tools to help you beat the urge to smoke. There has never been a better time to quit!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The American Cancer Society\u2019s FreshStart program is designed to help participants stop smoking by providing them with all of the essential information and strategies needed to direct their own efforts at stopping. The program focuses on an active pragmatic approach to quitting smoking through active participation and group support. Participants are encouraged to apply what they learn in FreshStart to other aspects of their lives.<\/p>\n<p>The program begins Tuesday, September 10, from 7:30 a.m. to 8:45 a.m., and will run for four weeks, ending Tuesday, October 1.\u00a0Sessions are located at Gaylord E.
