{"id":43239,"date":"2013-09-20T05:59:29","date_gmt":"2013-09-20T10:59:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/?p=43239"},"modified":"2013-09-20T05:59:29","modified_gmt":"2013-09-20T10:59:29","slug":"gasoline-prices-how-low-can-they-go","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/2013\/09\/20\/gasoline-prices-how-low-can-they-go\/","title":{"rendered":"Gasoline prices: How low can they go?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><i>Gasoline price news<\/i><\/p>\n<p>CHICAGO, Ill. &#8212; Everybody\u2019s asking: \u201cHow low can they go?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile past performance is never an absolute indicator of future price positions,\u00a0a review of recent history gives us good reason to expect prices to fall between now and Halloween by between 20 to 25 cents per gallon,\u201d says Patrick DeHaan, senior petroleum analyst for GasBuddy.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"MGN Online graphic\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thevwindependent.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Gasoline-price-graphic-8-2012.jpg\" rel=\"https:\/\/www.thevwindependent.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Gasoline-price-graphic-8-2012.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-28382\" style=\"border: 1px solid black\" alt=\"Gasoline price graphic 8-2012\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thevwindependent.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Gasoline-price-graphic-8-2012.jpg\" width=\"250\" height=\"188\" \/><\/a>DeHaan said that, when analysts looked at prices from September 19 through October 31 &#8212; over a five-year period &#8212;\u00a0it became clear the numbers were skewed because of the extraordinary plunge gas prices took in 2008 when they moved from the record peak ($4.12) in July to the record low ($1.61) by year\u2019s end.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn 2008, the price from September 19 to October 31 plummeted by $1.28 per gallon. We\u2019re expecting a much tamer decrease this year,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>From September 19 to Halloween, the U.S. average price has fallen by an average of 28 cents per gallon over the past five years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut we\u2019re leaning closer to the 10-year average, which is 23 cents per gallon,\u201d DeHaan noted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRetail gas prices during this period actually increased in four of the past 10 years, but barring a hurricane or sudden turbulence in the Middle East, we\u2019re confident that most metro markets across the U.S. will see their prices fall in this 20-to-25 cent range,\u201d said Gregg Laskoski, another GasBuddy senior petroleum analyst.<\/p>\n<p>GasBuddy operates over 250 similar websites that track gasoline prices at over 140,000 gasoline stations in the United States and Canada.
