The district has already made up one of the seven remaining days with classes held this past Saturday.

Students are also scheduled to attend school this coming Saturday, March 21, and the board also set the day after Easter – Monday, April 25 – as a make-up day for this school year.

Estes said having school on Saturday has been a positive so far. “The first went extremely well,” the superintendent said of Saturday classes, noting that attendance this past Saturday was higher than on a typical school day, according to High School Principal Mike Biro.

With the scheduling of April 25 as a make-up day, as well as this coming Saturday, Crestview will have to make up either two or four days, depending on whether legislation now before the Ohio General Assembly is passed. If the pending measure, House Bill 36, is adopted, school districts would return to having five excused calamity days, meaning Crestview would only have to make up two additional days, if no other calamity days are used.

Estes said extending the school day either a half-hour or a full hour would provide a benefit right now, since it would provide more time for teaching staff to work with students prior to the upcoming Ohio Achievement Tests, scheduled to be administered April 27.

Since the minimum school day is 5½ hours, extending the school day a half-hour means the district would have to do so for 11 days to make up one school day, and approximately six days if the school day is lengthened a full hour.

“We’re probably going to do something (to lengthen the school day), but I don’t know what at this point,” the superintendent said.

A decision would likely be needed at the April board meeting to have any effect this year.

Estes said a number of other districts have been interested in Crestview’s Saturday class idea. “I like to think we’re leading the way (in finding alternatives to adding days to the end of the school year),” the superintendent added.

Elementary Principal Kathy Mollenkopf noted that kindergarten registration began Monday and is continuing through Friday. Mollenkopf said 10 kindergarten students registered the first day.

The board also talked about the renovation project, with there being several problems, including rubber tile work and noisy ventilators installed above the false ceilings, as well as locks and hardware for interior doors.

A scheduled walk-through to inspect a rubber tile test area laid down over Christmas has been scrapped, since both the tile manufacturer and contractor have decided to have independent testing done to find out what has caused the problems with the tile.

A manifold system that would allow vocational agriculture students to weld in their area should be installed, starting next week.

The good news is the district remains $168,000 under budget on the project, according to the project manager.

Also Monday evening, Estes informed the board that the contracts of three administrators – Mollenkopf, Dave Bowen and Keith Rydell – would be expiring at the end of the school year. Action will likely be taken at the April board meeting.

Board members also approved the final reading of a new policy creating a smoke-free campus at Crestview. Estes said the policy would not go into effect until August 1, so that the community could be informed as to what the policy entails.

In other action, the board:

Learned that Trent Kreischer would not be returning to his supplemental position as district public relations person after seven years.

Approved the following supplemental contracts: Randy Grandstaff and Betsy Howell, varsity track assistants.

Authorized an overnight trip for the Model UN program to Hope College in Holland, Mich., under the guidance of advisor Dan Kline.

Went into executive session to discuss personnel matters, with no action taken afterwards.

The next regular meeting of the Crestview Local Board of Education will be at 6 p.m. Monday, April 18, in the district boardroom.

DAVE MOSIER/independent editor CONVOY – The Crestview Local Board of Education added a make-up day to its calendar for the 2010-2011 school year and also discussed the possibility of lengthening school days 30-60 minutes to avoid having to add more days in June.
