CELINA — The Van Wert Cougars had two quarters in Friday night\u2019s Western Buckeye League match-up with Celina, but it was the two bad quarters that spelled the difference in the game, as the Bulldogs won 65-44 at home.<\/p>\n

The Cougars took the early lead, 15-12, at the end of the first quarter, but Celina then outscored Van Wert 18-9 in the second period to lead by six points, 30-24, at the half.<\/p>\n

The third quarter was the killer, though, as the Bulldogs went on a 21-6 run to go up by 21 points, 51-30, heading into the final period of play.<\/p>\n

The Cougars outscored Celina 14-13 in the final stanza but the damage was done as the Bulldogs did enough offensively and defensively to preserve the victory.<\/p>\n

Matt Bidlack led Van Wert in scoring with 16 points, while Nathan Stoller added 11 for the Cougars. Mason Ross was Celina\u2019s, and the game\u2019s, top scorer with 17 points, while Grant Laffin added 10 points and Caleb Hoying scored 9 for the Bulldogs.<\/p>\n

Van Wert shot well from three-point range, hitting half of their 12 shots, while the Bulldogs were 5 of 14 from behind the arc. Two-point field goals were another story, as the Celina defense kept the Cougars out of the paint. The Bulldogs were 22 of 39 from two-point range (56.4 percent), while Van Wert hit just 10 of 26 two-point attempts (38.5 percent).<\/p>\n

Both teams were 6 of 10 from the free-throw line.<\/p>\n

Celina dominated on the boards, bringing down 25 rebounds to 17 for the Cougars. Van Wert also had more turnovers, 12-10, than the Bulldogs.<\/p>\n

With the win, Celina goes to 11-3 overall and 5-1 in the WBL, while the Cougars fall to 6-8 overall and 2-4 in league play.<\/p>\n

The Bulldogs also won the junior varsity game, 49-44. Colin Smith lead the Van Wert JVs with 16 points, while Gavin Gardner added 10 for the Cougars. Mitch Mabry scored 18 for Celina.<\/p>\n
