(Jan Dunlap\/Van Wert independent)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Van Wert Lady Cougars defeated Lima Central Catholic 50-43 in a non-conference girls\u2019 basketball game held Tuesday in the Cougar\u2019s Den.<\/p>\n<p>Alexa Dunlap led the Cougars with 12 points, while Cheyenne Handy added 9 points for the Cougars. LCC was led by Meredith Shepherd\u2019s 12 points, while Kayla Verhoff scored 11 points for the Lady Thunderbirds.<\/p>\n<p>Van Wert led by a basket, 15-13, at the end of the first quarter, but the Cougars ratcheted down the defense in the second stanza, forcing LCC into turnovers that Van Wert converted into points and a 12-point halftime lead, 30-18.<\/p>\n<p>The Lady T-Birds returned the favor in the third quarter, outscoring Van Wert 15-6 to get within three points, 36-33, at the three-quarter mark in the game.<\/p>\n<p>But the Cougars kept their cool and finished out the contest with a 14-10 fourth quarter to secure the victory.<\/p>\n<p>With the win, Van Wert goes to 16-4 on the year, while the T-Birds fall to 13-5.<\/p>\n<p>There was no junior varsity contest.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thevwindependent.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/VW-girls-vs-LCC-boxscore-2-2014.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-48184\" alt=\"VW girls vs LCC boxscore 2-2014\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thevwindependent.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/VW-girls-vs-LCC-boxscore-2-2014.jpg\" width=\"545\" height=\"139\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>DAVE MOSIER\/independent sports The Van Wert Lady Cougars defeated Lima Central Catholic 50-43 in a non-conference girls\u2019 basketball game held Tuesday in the Cougar\u2019s Den.
