The Wassenberg Camera Club’s next meeting will be\u00a0held Thursday, Feb. 13, at 7 p.m. at the Wassenberg Art Center at 214 S. Washington St. \u00a0“Night Photography” will be the competition theme.\u00a0For a $1 entry fee, members may submit three 4-inch x 6-inch prints or jpg slides.\u00a0Pictures must include the competition name, slide\u00a0title and owner’s name. Please email slide files no larger than 1 megabyte each to: vwcameraclub@gmail.com<\/a> no later than Tuesday, February 11.\u00a0Winners must be present to receive awards.<\/p>\n

The program that evening will be on Special Effects.\u00a0Three techniques will be discussed.\u00a0 Ghost Photography (how to make images transparent), Bokeh (how to produce a soft, blurred background), and Starbursts (how to show rays of light).<\/p>\n

All Wassenberg Camera Club meetings are open to the public and anyone, regardless of skill level who has an interest in photography is encouraged to attend.<\/p>\n

Night Photography might be defined in two different ways.\u00a0 One\u00a0could say it is that time when the sun is below the horizon, or it’s\u00a0the time between dusk and dawn.\u00a0 Either way, the sun’s rays might be visible on high peaks, buildings\u00a0or clouds, but the sun itself would not be seen.<\/p>\n

All sorts of shooting opportunities arise during this time.\u00a0 City streets and buildings may become more vibrant, rising and setting suns\u00a0often paint rich colors on the clouds and bodies of water, storms may\u00a0produce dramatic lightning flashes, outdoor concerts and sporting events can afford lighting not available at other times, moon and star pictures\u00a0can’t be\u00a0taken at any other time, and fair and amusement park rides can provide\u00a0interesting light patterns. With a little thought, there are many other opportunities you can add.<\/p>\n

The purpose, or subject of your picture, will determine whether you will shoot early to gain the light and color to decrease the difference between the lights and their background, or late to emphasize that contrast.\u00a0 In either case, the tripod will be needed to assure a sharp image.\u00a0 Activating the image stabilization and noise reduction and\/or using the self-timer or cable release will also improve the sharpness.\u00a0 Many cameras have a low light or nighttime setting. Activating it will\u00a0help with exposure.\u00a0 Auto focus is not accurate in low light, so use your manual settings.\u00a0 Take a flashlight with you\u00a0for changing camera settings in the dark and an extra set of batteries for the camera.\u00a0Misunderstandings can happen after dark, so you may want to\u00a0inform law enforcement and\/or property owners of your presence and intent before setting up to shoot.<\/p>\n
