{"id":48733,"date":"2014-02-19T14:04:08","date_gmt":"2014-02-19T19:04:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/?p=48733"},"modified":"2014-02-19T14:04:35","modified_gmt":"2014-02-19T19:04:35","slug":"night-photography-winners","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/2014\/02\/19\/night-photography-winners\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Night Photography&#8221; winners"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Rex Dolby<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Wassenberg Camera Club&#8217;s recent meeting on Thursday, Feb. 13, at the Wassenberg Art Center, was both interesting and educational.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_48734\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-48734\" style=\"width: 330px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thevwindependent.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Hawkins1stPrint.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-48734 \" style=\"border-width: 1px;border-color: black;border-style: solid\" alt=\"New York's Williamsburg Bridge, photographed by Will Hawkins, was the first place print.\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thevwindependent.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Hawkins1stPrint.jpg\" width=\"330\" height=\"218\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-48734\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">New York&#8217;s Williamsburg Bridge, photographed by Will Hawkins, was the first place print.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Will Hawkins&#8217; photo of\u00a0the Williamsburg Bridge, which spans\u00a0the East River and\u00a0connects Queens and Manhattan in New York City, placed first, and his picture of fireworks at the last Hot Air Affair took second in the club&#8217;s monthly competition, \u201cNight Photography.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Judging the best slide however, was another matter.\u00a0A historical first occurred when not being able to open the file containing the slides forced a postponement of selecting the best slide till next month&#8217;s meeting.<\/p>\n<p>Seth Baker, Executive Secretary of the Van Wert County Foundation and former interim director of the Wassenberg Art Center, introduced himself to the club.\u00a0 He shared information about the Foundation&#8217;s history, mission, and sources of income, as well as\u00a0about himself.<\/p>\n<p>Will Hawkins demonstrated his MeFoto RoadTrip travel tripod, which folds to only 15.4 inches long\u00a0and extends to 61.6 inches high.\u00a0 The unit can support 17.6 pounds and can be converted into a monopod.\u00a0 This monopod conversion is a feature to keep in mind for those considering a tripod purchase.<\/p>\n<p>Vice President Stuart Jewett then led the discussion about\u00a0the monthly competition and details\u00a0concerning the photos to be\u00a0submitted.\u00a0 The discussion was necessary because there had been an unofficial understanding about conducting the monthly competition, but nothing could be found in writing that would provide consistent ways of entering pictures and selecting the winners.\u00a0 Some\u00a0rules were easily agreed upon, but other rules were obviously more controversial and would require more time to reach a conclusion that the majority could accept.\u00a0 As a result, the monthly competition rules will be finalized at the next meeting.<\/p>\n<p>Stuart then demonstrated how he had achieved the appearance of placing a ghost into a picture.\u00a0 Basically, you lock your camera on a tripod and take two pictures. One with the total image (ghost and background) \u00a0and one without the selected image.\u00a0 Place the two images exactly on top of each other and adjust the opacity of one picture till\u00a0the other picture\u00a0shows through to the desired amount.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_48735\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-48735\" style=\"width: 330px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thevwindependent.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Hawkins2Print.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-48735 \" style=\"border-width: 1px;border-color: black;border-style: solid\" alt=\"Fireworks burst at the Hot Air Affair, photographed by Will Hawkins, was the second place print.\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thevwindependent.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Hawkins2Print.jpg\" width=\"330\" height=\"219\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-48735\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Fireworks burst at the Hot Air Affair, photographed by Will Hawkins, was the second place print.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Bokeh effect is a method of blurring the background to emphasize the subject.\u00a0 A tripod and a low f-stop (large lens opening) will accomplish this effect.<\/p>\n<p>Producing a star effect can be achieved several ways.\u00a0 You can program this effect in some cameras.\u00a0 There are a lot of different filters available that can be attached in front of the lens.\u00a0 Even stretching a piece of nylon hosiery in front of the lens will produce a star effect, but any time you are shooting at a light source that is brighter than its surroundings, the starburst will be created by the lens opening used.\u00a0 The wider the lens opening the shorter and softer\u00a0the flare, and the smaller the lens opening, the longer the fingers of the flare will be.<\/p>\n<p>It was announced that the Fort Wayne Photography Club is sponsoring a program by two professional photographers, Steve Vorderman and Tim Brumbelor, who will highlight their travel experiences around the world and emphasize a fine art approach to travel photography.\u00a0 The meeting will start at 7 p.m. in the Townhouse Retirement Community on St. Joe Center Road in Fort Wayne, Ind.
