{"id":49475,"date":"2014-03-12T06:12:24","date_gmt":"2014-03-12T11:12:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/?p=49475"},"modified":"2014-03-13T08:09:25","modified_gmt":"2014-03-13T13:09:25","slug":"county-unemployment-rise-follows-statewide-trend","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/2014\/03\/12\/county-unemployment-rise-follows-statewide-trend\/","title":{"rendered":"County jobless rise follows state pattern"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><i>Van Wert independent\/ODJFS information<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Van Wert County and its neighbors followed a statewide trend that saw all 88 Ohio counties experience a rise in unemployment during the month of January.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thevwindependent.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Jobless-Rate-Map-1-2014.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-49476\" alt=\"Jobless Rate Map 1-2014\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thevwindependent.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Jobless-Rate-Map-1-2014.jpg\" width=\"330\" height=\"357\" \/><\/a>Van Wert County saw a modest increase, from December\u2019s 6.1 percent unemployment rate to 6.5 percent in January. According to labor force estimates from the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services, in conjunction with the U.S. Labor Department Bureau of Labor Statistics, the county\u2019s workforce decreased by 300 people \u2013 the largest decline in recent months \u2013 while those employed also fell from 13,000 in December 2013 to 12,700 in January. The number of unemployed county residents stayed the same at 900.<\/p>\n<p>Among neighboring counties, Mercer County again had the lowest unemployment rate, not only in the area, but statewide as well. The county\u2019s jobless rate in January was 4.4 percent, up six-tenths of a percent from December 2013. Auglaize County was second among neighboring counties with an unemployment rate of 5.0 percent, an increase of four-tenths of a percent over December\u2019s 4.6 percent jobless rate.<\/p>\n<p>Putnam County\u2019s unemployment rate in January was the same as Van Wert County, at 6.5 percent \u2013 up eight-tenths of a percent from December\u2019s 5.7 percent jobless rate, while Paulding County\u2019s unemployment rate was 6.8 percent, up seven-tenths of a percent over December 2013, when the jobless rate was 6.1 percent.<\/p>\n<p>Allen County was again the neighboring county with the highest unemployment rate, at 7.6 percent in January, up seven-tenths of a percent from December\u2019s 6.8 percent jobless rate.<\/p>\n<p>Statewide, all 88 counties saw a jump in unemployment in January, compared to December 2013. In addition to Mercer County, those counties with unemployment rates under 5.5 percent included Holmes (4.8 percent), Delaware (4.8 percent), Auglaize and Union (5.5 percent).<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->Seven counties had unemployment rates above 12 percent.
