(photo courtesy of the Wright B Flyer non-profit corporation)

Plans for a beer concession as part of the Wheels-N-Wings Festival at the Van Wert County Regional Airport have been resurrected by a legal opinion by Van Wert Law Director Greg Unterbrink stating that having a state liquor license for the event supersedes a local ordinance banning alcohol sales and consumption on public property.

Plans moved forward for the event during a Wheels-N-Wings Festival Committee meeting held Monday night. Following the legal clarification by Unterbrink last Friday about the legality of beer sales as part of the festival, members of the Van Wert County Regional Airport board who attended the meeting said that group’s original agreement dating from November 9, 2010, to support the event, as presented by the festival committee, would remain in effect. The airport board had previously agreed to allow the Wheels-N-Wings Festival to take place on the airport grounds, provided it met legal and liability requirements. The beer concession will be hosted by the local Van Wert Elks, which will be obtaining the necessary permit.

Also at Monday night’s meeting, plans were discussed concerning many of the other activities taking place during the festival. Larry Lee, director of the Van Wert Area Convention and Visitors Bureau and spokesperson for the festival committee, said the festival will provide a full day’s entertainment for the whole family and people of all ages. Although there are still many details to be finalized Lee was able to report a general outline of the festival activities has been completed.

The festival will actually kick off on Friday evening at the Pitt Stop Restaurant, where a cruise-in will be held. The restaurant will be providing the space, food and entertainment for the evening. Door prizes will also be awarded. Car owners registering at the cruise-in will receive free entrance to the Saturday afternoon car show at the airport.

John Marshall, local car enthusiast and head of the subcommittee organizing the car show, said information about the event is being distributed locally and regionally through flyers and advertisements. He reported that some vendors have been contacted about participating. A $5 entry fee will be collected on site for the show, which will run from noon to 4 p.m. Awards will be given to the top 20 judged cars and dash plaques will be available to the 50 cars registered. Marshall also reported that there would be a motorcycle poker run, organized by the American Patriots Club. Area new car dealers will have the opportunity to display new cars at the festival, as well.

The festival will also include a motorcycle show, hosted by the Van Wert Cushman Club. Larry Webb, head of the subcommittee organizing this activity, also said advertisements and flyers about the motorcycle show have been sent out, with the anticipation that several vintage motorcycles would make an appearance at the festival.

Van Wert County Regional Airport Manager Tom Dunno has been working with Lee to arrange several unique aircraft displays for the festival. Area pilots are being invited to “fly in” for the early morning pancake-and-sausage breakfast being prepared by the American Legion Post 178 in Van Wert. Other aircraft displays will include a Vietnam-era Huey 360 helicopter, WACO biplanes from the Troy Historical Society, and the Wright “B” Flyer from Dayton. The Grimes Flying Lab will also be making a return visit and will be putting on a light show at dusk, while the National Aviation Hall of Fame will be bringing a flight simulator and other historical displays.

Other flying-related activities include radio-controlled airplane demonstrations, skydiving exhibitions, para-motor displays, and airplane rides. The local airport is also planning some children’s activities in conjunction with the festival.

Lee also reported that a small craft fair is being planned and entertainment for all ages is being arranged, including a candy drop and small rides for kids. There will be musical entertainment throughout the day, culminating with an appearance of the group Sierra Shame beginning at approximately 7:30 p.m. The group was featured at last year’s Rib Cook-Off and received great reviews by the crowd.

And what would a festival be without food? In addition to the early morning pancake-and-sausage breakfast, several other food options will available throughout the day, including a chicken wing contest with area restaurants and vendors participating.

Lee said a complete schedule of all activities will be available by late April, but hopes the public will begin marking their calendars to make plans for attending this year’s great event, which will be held May 21.

For more information about any of the above activities, as well as questions about either participating in or helping with the festival, contact Lee at 419.238.9378.

Van Wert independent/Wheels-N-Wings Committee info Plans for a beer concession as part of the Wheels-N-Wings Festival at the Van Wert County Regional Airport have been resurrected by a legal opinion by Van Wert Law Director Greg Unterbrink stating that having a state liquor license for the event supersedes a local ordinance banning alcohol sales and […]

[3

post-5112","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-news
"publishpress_future_workflow_manual_trigger":
["GET
