But you will definitely get a kick out of this show even if you are not a big fan of superheroes. Trust me, I am not a superhero fanatic, yet I really enjoyed this night of entertainment at the theatre.

<img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-51339 " style="border: 1px solid black;" alt="The cast of "Insane with Power," the latest production of Van Wert Civic Theatre, cavort onstage during Friday's performance. (photo submitted)

Just wait until you meet the superheroes of Insane with Power (I knew it was going to be an interesting show with superhero names like Dim Bulb, Mental, and Speed Freak).

The show starts out in a mental health facility that is being investigated by journalist Lois Lancaster, played by Kim Hughes. Her goal is to figure out the current state of these facilities. She begins by interviewing the doctor, played by Tina Kowalski. Then she is scheduled to meet with patients who think they are superheroes.

The energy of the show quickly takes off when the superheroes Dim Bulb, Mental, and Speed Freak, brilliantly played by Nick McClellan, Kari Gall, and Joe Mauer, enter the room. They would make Batman and Robin envious of their super powers. You can’t help but laugh at their goofy facial expressions and funny gestures, especially Nick McClellan as Dim Bulb.

I don’t know how actress Kim Hughes kept from laughing when Nick’s character of Dim Bulb was staring right at her with one of his hilarious facial expressions. She was able to stay in character the entire time and brought out even more humor. Dan Hirn plays the so-called “normal” patient, but his disco dance moves and other antics added more comical moments to the show. The performance will have you laughing and wondering where it will take you next. There are some interesting twists and turns along the way as the superheroes set out to save the day. You will have to see the show, though, to witness the unexpected.

The performance was enhanced by the set, which was designed by Howell and Doug Grooms. It presented a nicely furnished room that would come to be expected in such a facility. Burdette Bolenbaugh and Grooms handled the technical side of the show quite well, with fitting music and smooth lighting transitions.

Bolenbaugh’s impeccable timing with his numerous, and often funny, sound bites were right on cue throughout the performance. The music and sound effects definitely played an important part in the production. Finally, wait until you see the superhero costumes developed by the cast members. They will leave you with a lasting impression (let’s just say that “Fruit of the Loom” will bring on a new meaning to you).

I encourage you to spend a fun evening at Van Wert Civic Theatre to watch Insane with Power. Show dates are tonight and tomorrow and May 8-10 at the Civic Theatre. Evening performances begin at 8 p.m., while the Sunday matinee starts at 2 in the afternoon.
