State legislator races are about the only items of interest on the ballot in Van Wert County for Tuesday\u2019s primary election.<\/p>\n

\"Election<\/a>Both State Senator Cliff Hite and State Representative Tony Burkley are facing Republican primary challenges on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

Hite, who seeking re-election to his First Senate District seat, has two opponents on Tuesday: Van Wert County farmer and businessman Milo Schaffner and the Rev. Corey Shankleton, a \u201cfamily values\u201d candidate who lives in the Williams County village of Kunkle.<\/p>\n

Schaffner, a Hoaglin Township trustee and former Lincolnview Local Board of Education member, also touts family values, noting that his campaign rests on three tenets: belief in the Bible as the divine word of God, belief that life begins at conception and that the U.S. Constitution was written with divine guidance.<\/p>\n

Hite, a former educator and coach who was appointed to his current position when Governor John Kasich appointed then-senator Steve Buehrer to head the Ohio Bureau of Workers Compensation.<\/p>\n

Burkley, a former Paulding County commissioner and who is seeking re-election to his second term as the state representative for the 82nd Ohio House District, is facing first-time candidate Brett W. Eley, a Wapakoneta native.<\/p>\n

U.S. Representative Bob Latta has no opposition in Tuesday\u2019s Republican primary, but will face Democrat challenger Robert Fry of Delphos and Libertarian candidate Eric Eberly in the November general election.<\/p>\n

Latta is seeking his third term in Congress after being appointed to replace Paul Gillmor, who died suddenly as a result of a fall at his Washington, D.C., residence seven years ago.<\/p>\n

Several county officials are running unopposed on Tuesday. They include Van Wert County Probate-Juvenile Court Judge Kevin Taylor, County Commissioner Thad Lichtensteiger and County Auditor Nancy Dixon, a Democrat who has been auditor for more than three decades.<\/p>\n

There are also a slew of people running for Republican and Democrat central committee posts, but there is only one race to be decided there on Tuesday: Scott Miller and Brian O\u2019Neill are both running for the York Township seat on the Republican Central Committee.<\/p>\n

No local issues are on the ballot this time around, but there is one proposed amendment to the Ohio Constitution up for consideration. The proposed amendment calls for authorization of the issuance of general obligation bonds for the funding of public infrastructure capital improvement projects.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
