It was a pretty ho-hum primary election in Van Wert County, with the exception of Delphos voters, who came out to pass two school levies and a city income tax issue. Only 2,803 of the county\u2019s 19,729 registered voters cast ballots in Tuesday\u2019s primary election, according to unofficial results released by the Van Wert County Board of Elections.<\/p>\n

\"Election<\/a>Delphos voters approved a 5.5-mill school renewal levy 859-392, while a 2.5-mill renewal levy passed 869-383. Also adopted was a 0.25 percent increase to Delphos\u2019 income tax, increasing the amount Delphos residents would pay from 1.5 percent to 1.75 percent. The issue was approved 660-421, which is lower than the school levies, but still a good win for the city\u2019s parks and recreational facilities.<\/p>\n

The only totaling local primary race was between Scott Miller and Brian O\u2019Neill for York Township representative to the Van Wert County Republican Central Committee, which Miller won 37-31.<\/p>\n

Hoaglin Township Trustee Milo Schaffner did well in the county in his bid for the Republican nomination for the 1st Ohio Senate District seat, edging incumbent Cliff Hite 1,141 to 901, while the other Republican primary candidate, Corey Shankleton, received 248 votes from county residents.<\/p>\n

Schaffner said he was pleased with the county results. \u201cI\u2019m really happy with the results,\u201d he said. \u201cI was sort of concerned, but then four people called me in the last two days and I felt really good about Van Wert County, and I\u2019m really thankful for all the people who voted for me\u2026 .\u201d<\/p>\n

Unfortunately for the local candidate, Hite retained a substantial majority districtwide, easily winning the primary with 17,739 votes, as of 11 p.m., while Shankleton was second with 6,332 votes and Schaffner third with 5,196 votes.<\/p>\n

Ohio Representative Tony Burkley also had little trouble in winning his primary race against political newcomer Brett Eley, outpolling Eley 1,560 to 538 in Van Wert County and 6,515-2,218 districtwide, as of 11 p.m. Tuesday.<\/p>\n

All county officials on the ballot were unopposed, with Juvenile-Probate Judge Kevin Taylor, County Commissioner Thad Lichtensteiger, and County Auditor Nancy Dixon all moving on to the general election in November.<\/p>\n

State Issue I passed in Van Wert County and statewide. The county approved the issue 1,845-958, while the issue was up 759,750-410,078 statewide, as of 11 p.m. Tuesday.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
