(Photo submitted)

Students are starting to feel the end of the school year approaching this first week of May as spring sports near the end of their regular seasons, the final concert from the music department is under way, and traditional spring events like Fun Day and the Relay for Life are set for the near future.

Students and teachers can let out a sigh of relief and get home a little bit sooner after this week as the extended days used to make up missed school days come to an end Friday. Students will have gone to school for an extra half hour for 33 straight school days and will likely enjoy returning to the normal schedule.

“I’m excited about getting back to a regular schedule because now I can go home and relax before I go to work instead of going straight there,” said junior Kylee Gent.

As the spring sports near the end of their regular seasons, the softball team took some time out from games and practice to visit the Ronald McDonald house in Columbus over the weekend. The JV and varsity teams went down to Columbus on Friday, and on Saturday, they helped out at the Ronald McDonald house by performing various helpful tasks. Then the teams traveled to the Children’s Hospital to deliver care packages and blankets to patients there.

“The best part of the experience was hopefully making a difference in the lives of children that we may not ever meet again,” said Mackenzie Riggenbach.

On Friday the music department will perform their last concert of the school year with their annual Pops Concert. Some songs the choirs have prepared for the show include the hit song from the movie Frozen, “Let It Go” and an African version of the Lord’s Prayer called “Baba Yetu”. The concert band has prepared several songs including “The Planets” and “Sea of Tranquility”.

Sophomore Summer Strickler said, “I enjoy playing my French horn but big performances make me nervous. I’m looking forward to it being over.”

With Fun Day and the Relay for Life being planned by the student council, students are finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel for this school year. The students always look forward to these events because they involve an afternoon off from their studies and a chance to get outside to enjoy some time in the warm weather with friends.

Fun Day is the annual competition between classes involving games like egg toss, tug-of-war, watermelon eating contest and many more. The Relay for Life is an opportunity for students to donate money to the American Cancer Society and raise awareness for cancer research. Both of these events put a smile on students’ faces and help them end the year on a positive note.

Students are starting to feel the end of the school year approaching this first week of May as spring sports near the end of their regular seasons, the final concert from the music department is under way, and traditional spring events like Fun Day and the Relay for Life are set for the near future.
