{"id":5358,"date":"2011-03-26T04:34:59","date_gmt":"2011-03-26T09:34:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/?p=5358"},"modified":"2011-03-28T03:17:44","modified_gmt":"2011-03-28T08:17:44","slug":"county-unemployment-rate-drops-5-allen-county-now-higher","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/2011\/03\/26\/county-unemployment-rate-drops-5-allen-county-now-higher\/","title":{"rendered":"County jobless rate drops in February"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>DAVE MOSIER\/<\/strong><em>independent editor<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-5364\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thevwindependent.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/Jobless-Rate-Map-February-2011-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"380\" height=\"419\" \/>For the first time in more than a year, Van Wert County did not have the highest unemployment rate among neighboring counties, according to jobless figures for February released on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>Figures compiled by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services indicate that the county\u2019s unemployment rate fell a half a percentage point from &#8212; 10.8 percent to 10.3 percent &#8212; between January and February of this year.<\/p>\n<p>Paulding County\u2019s jobless rate fell four-tenths of a point, from 10.7 percent to 10.3 percent, to tie with Van Wert County, but Allen County, which had an unemployment rate of 10.6 percent in January, only fell two-tenths of percentage point to take over the top spot, as far as jobless rates go, at 10.4 percent. Mercer County again was the lowest county in the area in February, and third lowest in the state (compared to the lowest in January), with a jobless rate of 7.0 percent, up a tenth of a percent from January.<\/p>\n<p>Auglaize County was second lowest at 9.2 percent, but saw its unemployment rise a tenth of a percent in February from 9.1 percent in January, while Putnam County was third lowest among neighboring counties with a 9.6 percent jobless rate, which remained the same as its rate in January.<\/p>\n<p>In Van Wert County, estimates show that 12,800 of the workforce total of 14,300 were working in February, while 1,500 were unemployed.<\/p>\n<p>Among the state&#8217;s 88 counties, the February 2011 unemployment rates ranged from a low of 6.7 percent in Delaware County to a high of 18.0 percent in Ottawa County. Rates decreased in 83 of the 88 counties. In February, the comparable rate for Ohio was 9.8 percent.<\/p>\n<p>Nine counties had unemployment rates at or below 8.5 percent in February. The counties with the lowest rates, other than Delaware were Holmes, 6.9; Mercer, 7.0; Franklin, 8.0; Union, 8.1; Hancock, 8.2; Geauga, 8.4; and Fairfield and Medina, 8.5 percent.<\/p>\n<p>Five counties had unemployment rates at or above 15.0 percent during February.
