The Ohio Department of Commerce Division of State Fire Marshal wants to urge Ohioans not to engage in the \u201cfire challenge.\u201d\u00a0 This challenge, recently made popular through social media, involves a person pouring a flammable liquid onto their body and then lighting themselves on fire.\u00a0 That person then nominates other friends to take part in the challenge.<\/p>\n
Doing this could result in serious injuries, including first, second and third degree burns or even death.<\/p>\n
\u201cFire is not something to be played with.\u00a0 The \u2018fire challenge\u2019 is not only extremely dangerous for the people involved, but it could also be a danger to other people or structures around you,\u201d said State Fire Marshal Larry Flowers. \u201cWe urge you to not take part in this new fad.\u201d<\/p>\n
Many of the participants in the \u201cfire challenge\u201d are teenagers.\u00a0 That\u2019s why Marshal Flowers is asking parents to talk with their children about the consequences of setting themselves on fire.\u00a0 He believes making young people aware of the severity of the challenge may deter them from taking part.<\/p>\n
\u201cSit down with your kids and let them know this isn\u2019t a safe game,\u201d said Marshal Flowers.\u00a0 \u201cWe need to make sure our children understand how dangerous this challenge actually is.\u201d<\/p>\n
