{"id":54906,"date":"2014-08-26T06:21:48","date_gmt":"2014-08-26T11:21:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/?p=54906"},"modified":"2014-08-26T06:23:07","modified_gmt":"2014-08-26T11:23:07","slug":"horse-racing-on-tap-at-2014-county-fair","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/2014\/08\/26\/horse-racing-on-tap-at-2014-county-fair\/","title":{"rendered":"Horse racing on tap at 2014 County Fair"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><i>Van Wert County Fair information<\/i><\/p>\n<p>The bell will ring and the gates fly open at noon less than a week from today when one of the most popular attractions of the Van Wert County Fair &#8212; Derby Day &#8212; kicks off.<\/p>\n<p>With the recent closing of one of Ohio\u2019s oldest horse tracks, Beulah Park in Grove City, the Van Wert County Fair\u2019s Derby Day is one of the few traditional venues left.\u00a0Derby Day is held in front of a grandstand that was built in 1928, but which saw several upgrades and improvements this year.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_28465\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-28465\" style=\"width: 320px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thevwindependent.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/2012-VW-County-Fair-6th-day-horseracing.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-28465 \" style=\"border: 1px solid black;\" alt=\"Thoroughbred horse racing was on tap during Labor Day activities at the Van Wert County Fair. (VW independent file photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>According to the Fair Board\u2019s \u201cspeed man,\u201d Mike Poling, the races attract a strong field of up-and-coming thoroughbred quarter horses in the 2-, 3-, and 4-year-old events, and each race also features pari-mutuel wagering that adds an element of excitement for fairgoers.<\/p>\n<p>The entry fee for each race is $40 and entries close at noon Friday, August 29.<\/p>\n<p>The purse for this year\u2019s 1 1\/8 mile Thoroughbred Open, which features only eight horses, includes $3,200 from sponsors, while the purse for the six other races (listed below) will include $2,500 added by sponsors.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>220 Quarter Horse\u20142 years old<\/li>\n<li>220 Quarter Horse\u20143 years old<\/li>\n<li>220 Quarter Horse\u20144 years old<\/li>\n<li>550 Quarter Horse\u20143 years old and up<\/li>\n<li>5-Furlong Thoroughbred<\/li>\n<li>6\u00bd-Furlong Thoroughbred<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Post time is noon sharp in front of the grandstand on Labor Day, Monday, September 1.
