{"id":5538,"date":"2011-03-30T03:25:56","date_gmt":"2011-03-30T08:25:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/?p=5538"},"modified":"2011-03-30T03:25:56","modified_gmt":"2011-03-30T08:25:56","slug":"vwhs-wrestling-team-hands-out-awards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/2011\/03\/30\/vwhs-wrestling-team-hands-out-awards\/","title":{"rendered":"VWHS wrestling team hands out awards"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Van Wert High School wrestling team concluded its season with a potluck banquet in the Van Wert High School-Middle School commons on Friday, March 18.\u00a0The coaches took turns speaking about each wrestler, from freshmen through juniors.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5539\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5539\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5539 \" style=\"border: 1px solid black\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thevwindependent.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/VWHS-wrestling-banquet-2011-seniors.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"338\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5539\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Seniors on the VWHS wrestling team include (from the left) Connor Massillo, Ericca Lehman and Cory Hirschy.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>When it was time to recognize the senior grapplers, all the coaches paid tributes to the two &#8220;who left their mark&#8221; on the Van Wert wrestling program:\u00a0Cory Hirschy and Connor Massillo.\u00a0They spoke about their favorite memories and highlighted both wresters\u2019 many accomplishments throughout this season and their careers.\u00a0Both were two-year team captains and four-year lettermen.<\/p>\n<p>Massillo placed first at both the Hamilton Township Invitational and the Clinton-Massie Invitational.\u00a0 He placed\u00a0third at the Greater Miami Valley Holiday Tournament, went 4-1 at the Fairborn Duals and was undefeated in the Middletown Duals.\u00a0His WBL record was 8-1.\u00a0He had 109 takedowns and 17 falls this season before a shoulder injury ended his season after the last WBL dual match.\u00a0In his four years at VWHS, he had 22 tournament places, nine tournament championships, was the 2009 and 2010 WBL champion; was the 2008, 2009, and 2010 sectional champion; was a district qualifier and placer in 2008, 2009, and 2010.\u00a0 He wrestled in the state tournament in 2009 and 2010, placing eighth his junior year.<\/p>\n<p>Massillo holds the freshman win record at 36 and was a scholar athlete in 2010.\u00a0He was a three-time Lima Area Wrestling Coaches Association All-Star wrestler and a 2010 Greater Toledo Area Wrestling Coaches Association All-Star selection.<\/p>\n<p>He earned 30 Cougar awards, 484 takedowns and 57 falls in his career and his four-year record\u00a0was\u00a0144 wins and 24 losses,\u00a0which is the all time best record in Van Wert wrestling history.<\/p>\n<p>Hirschy was runner-up at the Hamilton Township Invitational and Clinton-Massie Invitational.\u00a0He placed fifth at the Greater Miami Valley Holiday Tournament, and fourth at Dublin Scioto, where he had to default due to a knee injury.\u00a0He was undefeated at the Middletown Duals and was 4-1 at Fairborn.\u00a0His WBL season record was 9-0 and he was a WBL champion in 2009 and 2011 and a sectional champion this year.\u00a0He was a three-time district qualifier and placed sixth at districts this year.\u00a0He was a Lima Area Wrestling Coaches Association All-Star Wrestler in 2009 and 2011.\u00a0He had 20 tournament places and three tournament titles.\u00a0 He earned 12 Cougar awards during his career and has the fourth all-time best career record with 111 wins and 53 losses.\u00a0He set, and holds, the new VWHS career pin record with 75, 29 of those earned this year, and is a three-time VWHS scholar athlete and a 2011 Lima area scholar athlete.<\/p>\n<p>Also recognized was senior trainer Ericca Lehman, who has been with the team two years,\u00a0along with trainer Madelyn Blackmore.<\/p>\n<p>Three special awards were presented:\u00a0 Cory Hirschy\u00a0was\u00a0chosen as the Most Valuable Wrestler, Colton Royer\u00a0received the Most Improved\u00a0Wrestler award, and Daniel Thompson was\u00a0voted by his peers as the Cougar of the Year.<\/p>\n<p>There were seven scholar athletes and 12 varsity letter winners.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5540\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5540\" style=\"width: 545px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5540 \" style=\"border: 1px solid black\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thevwindependent.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/VWHS-wrestling-banquet-2011-team.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"545\" height=\"308\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5540\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Van Wert High School wrestling team and trainers include (front row, from the left) Ericca Lehman, Kyle Loshe, Jermaine Defore, Colton Royer, Daniel Thompson;
